I recommend upgrading to a new system. Most software that will come out from here on will be developed only for newer versions of Windows. You won't have to worry as much about security exploits that target only win98, for the same reason mac users don't have to worry as much (they have too small a market share for direct targeting), but you do need to worry about bugs that affect all versions of windows.
Anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware will help some, but the real security vulnerabilities are the ones that will just trash your system directly. And, as I said above, win98 will stop being supported by more and more software vendors.
If you don't want to shell out the $150-200+ for a new version of windows, I recommend looking at Linux. Most versions of it are well supported. And almost all are free and open source. A lot of the new flavors are also aimed at users that are used to the desktop environment that windows uses, and so has many similar features.

My hubby had the same problem...I eventually convinced him that the only way to run his programs was to upgrade. There are sooooo many programs out there that will start generating errors b/c you are using a now-outdated version of windows. I even have that problem myself and I am currently running windows 2k! Also looking for someone to maybe want to buy/trade win xp home(upgrade vers--98 SE & ME) for win xp pro.

pay $100 and get Windows XP or wait for Windows Vista so you won't have to upgrade as soon. Sorry but as the OS changes Microsoft can't support all of there systems anymore. Upgrade.

Computer software changes constantly. You will need to keep up. You will need to buy another more up-to-date software. Windows XP is very good.
