I answered this question when my aunt asked me last year whether or not it was true. She had read in an urban legend email that a Christian minister (Rick Mathes) to prisoners had met with a shaykh in the prison and had a dialogue with him and he had allegedly stated (sheepishly) that in the Quran muslims are required to kill infidels (non-believers) in order to enter Heaven.
(Although the minister DID go to the prison, the Muslim he met with was a new convert to Islam and was NOT in fact a shaykh and was not speaking with any authority at all. This can be verified on www.breakthechain.org)
I will now address the issue of infidels (non-muslims) and whether or not they must be killed (as well as the popularly mistranslated word Jihad that the Western media loves to toss about):
I AM an Arabic linguist as well as a Muslim. I had the same definition of jihad BEFORE I embraced Islam. According to Hans Wehr's "A Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic" Third Edition 1971 for USA and Canada, the word "jihad" is translated as: fight, battle, holy war (against the infidels, as a religious duty). The word jihad comes from the third measure of the root JAHADA.
The translation of the VERB form of the previously translated noun is: to endeavor, to strive; to fight for something; to wage holy war against the infidels. (Please note that as is the case with MOST translations of words in ANY language, you will see semi-colons between applicable definitions.)The definition of "holy war" is one of many definitions of the word jihad. Accord-
ing to the Holy Quran, the jihad against the infidels (non-believers of the ONE TRUE GOD, or polytheists) is the easiest of jihads. The hardest jihad (STRUGGLE, if you will) is the one against
one's self to do right and live according to God's will. This is
called Jihad Al-Nafs. There is also Jihad Al-Mal, or struggle with
money or wealth. And there is a Hadith, or quote from the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh), "Awdna min aljihad alasghar ila aljihad alakbar." Which means: "We returned from the smallest fight to the largest fight." He stated this upon completion of battle with the polytheist Arabs, who were attempting to kill all followers of Islam, as the spread of Islam was putting the idol makers out of business in Mecca. The smallest fight is the "holy war against the infidels" and the largest fight is the "fight against sinning". As to the meaning of "infidel",it means "non-believer". Non-believer in WHAT? A non-believer in Islam? NO! A non-believer in God, would have been a slightly more correct answer. According to same Hans Wehr Arabic-English dictionary; kaffar-infidel, unbeliever (as it relates to a person). and kufr- unbelief, infidelity, godlessness, atheism, blasphemy, profanity. The Holy Quran forbids believing men to marry UNBELIEVING women, how-
ever, it is PERMITTED to marry women who are "people of the Book" (meaning Jewish or Christian). OBVIOUSLY, if Islam taught it's followers to kill non-Muslims, the Quran would not permit marriage between Muslim and Christian or Muslim and Jew. Regarding killing: Islam teaches the SAME LAW brought to us from Allah (meaning THE GOD ((as there is no other)) through the prophet Moses (pbuh)--THOU SHALT NOT KILL. It is written in the Quran " On that account: We ordained For the children of Israel That if any one slew a person-unless it be for murder or for spreading Mischief in the land- It would be as if
He slew the whole people: And if any one saved a life. It would be
as if he saved The life of the whole people. Then although there
came To them our Messengers with Clear Signs, yet, Even after that, many Of them continued to commit Excesses in the
land." (Surat Al-Maieda, verse 32) Unjust killing is defined in the Quran as killing without the right to kill (e.g., in defense of self, family, land, Allah or in the course of death penalty for murder or rape.) And before the whole "pro/con death penalty debate" ensues, I'll just add an aya (verse) from the Quran regarding punishment: "And if ye punish, let your punishment be proportionate to the wrong that has been done to you. But if ye show patience, that is indeed the best (course) For those who are patient." (Surat Al-Nahl, 126) Forgiveness IS taught in the Quran. The Quran is the law sent from Allah to ALL peoples and it is upon which Islam is completely based. The alleged shaykh in the Mathes story acknowledged that there is currently a fatwa
in place telling muslims to kill non-believers in order to get into
heaven. This is absolutely NOT true! There is a DUTY in Islam for muslim to fight in defense of Islam and with his muslim brethren. No fatwa need be issued for this. And it is said in the Quran, "FIGHT AGAINST THOSE WHO FIGHT AGAINST YOU" and also, "ALLAH DOES NOT LOVE THOSE WHO ATTACK" meaning in both cases to defend ones self, but not to initiate killing/fighting. There is no prerequisite for any muslim to kill a non-muslim (or anyone else) in order to get into heaven. It is
written in the Quran, that the only ABSOLUTELY necessary thing for one to do in order to be able to go to heaven is to from his heart decree,"There is no god but the God." That is not to say that one can believe this and then go on sinning and killing and lusting and whatever, with no second thought about the afterlife. For to truly believe that there is no god but the God", one must strive to live one's life according to God's will and to worship Him until death. The question asked by Mathes in this anecdote is ludicrous and there is no foundation to it. In Islam, all are directed to believe in the message of love and forgiveness brought to the children of Israel by the prophet Jesus, (pbuh)and to believe and live by the laws sent to the children of Israel by the prophet Moses (pbuh) and to believe in all of the prophets sent to man by Allah. Allah is the same GOD, worshiped by Adam, Abraham, Noah, Moses, Ezra, Ezekial, Mary, Jesus AND Mohamed, (pbut).

Maybe you should actually READ the Quran before believe the proverbially "they" that say what is in it.

You need to ask them about their Mahdi (who will show up next year or within two years) who according to the Muslim prophecies will lead ALL MUSLIMS to kill every last Jew and every last unbeliever who refuses to convert to Islam.

This is a self fulfilling prophecy one that is willed to happen by some man who will take advantage of the false Islamic prophecies.., but in so doing fulfills the biblical prophecies of the coming Antichrist who comes from or does something major at the Dome of the Rock mosque - a Muslim mosque which houses a moon rock they kiss and reverence (an idol, no matter what excuses they use).

Bible prophecy happens despite man's will or wants or desires - Islam prophecies (what few if any every happened) were after the will of men, pushed my men and accomplished with intent.

No the Quran does not say that all infidels (non-muslims) must be killed, because it preaches to muslims to respect the people of the book (Jews and Christians) but to be cautious as they might become hostile toward muslims, and the Quran doesn't call for the killing of those who are neither people of the book nor muslims, because the uncle of the prophet Muhammad was an idol-worshipper and remained so, and the prophet didn't command to kill him and his friends, but for them to pay a special tax in order to be allowed to remain under muslim protection for living under muslim rule.

Yes, read it yourself. You can get free Korans online, and even posted through web pages.

you dont have to get far into it.

4:144 is my favorite

Do not choose unbelieving friends, and kill unbelievers where you find them.

Theres literally hundreds of these commands to kill unbelievers.

Now, for the people who say the koran speaks highly of Jews and Christians...it does at first. Then it calls Jews the greediest people are on earth, and Christians polythiests, and anyone who assigns a partner with Allah will not be forgiven.

they are only giving you half the story.

READ IT YOURSELF for the truth!

"For the Jews and Christians are people of the Book. Fear not, for they too shall have their rewards."

This is what the Quran says about "infidels"

Peace and mercy be upon through the Glory of God, Amen.
