What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and / or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Adopted by the IDA Board of Directors, Nov. 12, 2002. This Definition is also used by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

Studies show that individuals with dyslexia process information in a different area of the brain than do non-dyslexics.

Many people who are dyslexic are of average to above average intelligence.
Are there other learning disabilities besides dyslexia?

Dyslexia is one type of learning disability. Others include...

Dyscalculia - a mathematical disability in which a person has unusual difficulty solving arithmetic problems and grasping math concepts.

Dysgraphia - a neurological-based writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letters or write within a defined space.

Because we think in pictures, it is sometimes hard for us to understand letters, numbers, symbols, and written words.

What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a brain-based type of learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. These individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having normal intelligence. Although the disorder varies from person to person, common characteristics among people with dyslexia are difficulty with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.

Is there any treatment?

The main focus of treatment should be on the specific learning problems of affected individuals. The usual course is to modify teaching methods and the educational environment to meet the specific needs of the individual with dyslexia.

What is the prognosis?

For those with dyslexia, the prognosis is mixed. The disability affects such a wide range of people, producing different symptoms and varying degrees of severity, that predictions are hard to make. The prognosis is generally good, however, for individuals whose dyslexia is identified early, who have supportive family and friends and a strong self-image, and who are involved in a proper remediation program.

Actually it is a learning disability where letters are primarily backwards or jibberish and unless someone is helping you read this, it will be hard for you and for the other guy who already answered, you are wrong, spelled another word wrong, she spelled witch instead of which.

The word is dyslexic and although I'm nowhere near being an expert on the subject--I know there are different forms and people have it to different degrees. Dyslexics aren't stupid their brains interpret words differently. Besides, I have noticed people's grammar and spelling are getting a lot worse even without being dyslexic.

I think you might be talking about DYSLEXIA;
Dyslexia refers to a different learning style for reading and writing not associated with obvious problems such as bad eyesight, poor hearing, low intelligence or behavioural problems.
