The three leading causes of kitten death #1 fleas- kittens are so small they do not have much blood and can die from anemia. #2-food- Check and see if they are nursing if not you will have to intervine and start hand feeding the kittens #3- temperature kittens must be kept warm, In the past ive set a heating pad down and covered it with a towel so momma and kittens could stay warm. One other thing if the kittens eyes get crusted over and you notice drainage from their nose you are more then likely dealing with an upperresperatopry infection that needs to be addressed by a vet. In any case best to be safe take momma and the kittens to the vet.
Good-luck and take the kitten to the vet to check on him and maby even savve his life.....

My cat had six kittens her first and only time. Three died. Three lived and were very healthy. The three that lived were black and white. The other three looked almost pure siamese. There was a siamese cat in our neighbor hood that used to beat on her all the time. She wouldn't let these three nurse, and when we fed them, and then checked on them in the morning, they were all dead. Her anger towards the kittens surprised us as she was normally a very loving cat. We were told she let them died/killed them because she thought they were his. I'm not sure how much thinking a cat really does, but it does make sense in the circumstances that she loved the three that lived, and would have nothing to do with the three that died. There are also a lot of other reasons kittens can die. Sometimes the mother's body just isn't ready to carry around a liter of kittens, and they are malnutritioned when they are born. Another is that they aren't getting food, whether they aren't sure how to get it, or the mother isn't letting them, or there is something wrong with her that isn't allowing her milk out. Another reason is heat. They need to be kept very warm. It is also a good idea to have newspapers or an old blanket for them to curl up in, especially if there is no other kittens to cuddle with. Also, handling a new kitten will get your scent on it, and even though your cat may love you, the only scent they want on their kittens at first, is hers. Don't handle the kittens unless she isn't feeding them, and then only to feed them. The last is fleas, a baby kitten doesn't have enough blood to satisfy a flea, and this too can lead to death. Please check with your vet to see what could really be wrong. In the mean time, check for fleas around where the kitten is, and see if it is nursing. If it isn't, you'll have to get formula from your vet and feed her by hand. Good Luck. :)

I wouldn't call it normal. Some mothers are better than others. I would probably take the baby that is left to the vet. Make sure it is okay. Plus put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel in with the baby to make sure it stays warm sense he does not have his siblings to keep him warm.
Where are the kittens? In the house? Outside? Do they have fleas? Does the mother have fleas?

There is a diesease that kills baby kittens... it is called "Fade away Kitten Syndrome" and there is nothing that can really be done. My cat had a litter of 4 all but one died. They had Fade away kitten syndrome.

Call the vet.

When you say, I've lost 5. Does that mean you were picking up the last 5. Most pets don't like their babies being messed with. Sometimes, they'll refuse to feed their babies & then theirs nothing you can do. Yes it is natural, sometimes, the mama may only want to care for a select few; she may know some are sick & won't make it, she know them better than anyone. Your best bet is that next time, make sure mama cat is well taken care of, so she'll be able to take care of her own. If your cat is sick, then her babies may get sick as well. Take care of the one you do have & have fun with it Be Cool!

No that is not typical. Are they lost like dead? or you can't find them? If they died then you need to take kitten and mom to vet asap. There could be something wrong with mom and it will affect all her kittens. In some cases the mom might not nurture them and they could die. If you have no experience w/ new born kittens then you should take them to the vet. In the worst case the mom cat can die if there is something going on w/ her.

Yes, it's normal.
I've had a cat who got pregnant a lot of times.
The first litter she didn't care for them at all for the first few hours. Everything turned out fine though.
Every first litter a cat has is different, the second usually is tons better. The cat just doens't know what to do.

Yes. I had a cat who lost four out of six in her first litter. It was also her last litter (by the way) since we had her fixed afterward. She was never quite "right" in the head after that, and never really warmed to her daughters.

no..its not. usually its the other way around,,,lose 1 have 5.they must have been born with an illness they couldn't deal with. sometimes the mama lays on them and kills them..sometimes they don't know how to suckle and they don't get any milk right off they die. sometimes the mama doesn't have working milk bags for the kittens..alot can happen but you do have one left..see how its doing now and then and check its eyes..wipe with warm damp cloth now and then to ward of a cold..........m
