I have a USB external drive and wondered often if I could have a completely separate O.S. (either same ie. XP or one XP and the other one say media centre edition), installed on it and everytime my PC is turned on I get the option of which drive do I want to load from? Any assistance appreciated.

I have seen some interesting assistances so far with thanks. So how do I install the OS on the mass drive to begin with? Can I simply back up the whole of my CD drive including the operating system into the usb external drive? or should I simply insert my os CD and ask it to install it on the usb drive? I know it sounds beginner but I am still a novice and trying to learn from your experiences with lots of thanks.

I see you've gottenm some mixed information in your answers. Looks like most were correct though. Yes, you can install a different operating system onto an external drive. Yes, your motherboard needs to be able to support booting from a USB device if it is a USB drive. There are actually linux projects based on coming up with small linux installations to be able to run linux on a removable drive. When you are running 2 different versions of Windows (2 different versions of XP or XP and a different version of Windows) you will most likely be using the XP boot manager to determine which one to boot unless you have a commercial boot manager. (Or want to default to bot from USB and leave that drive disconnected when booting into the internal harddrive.)

certain you could. even if it isn't a strong answer in case you want to save faraway from viruses. there's a strong and undesirable about booting exterior force(fantastically a USB force). Prons:you could convey the USB and booting it any workstation you want. it would want to completely useful like the conventional workstation yet... Cons:in case you want besides from a USB force, you may want to get rid of or unplug the interior force first because the DOS will bump into and booting from the interior problematic disk first. Your workstation also might want to help booting from a USB. yet another element is that installation equipment for exterior force desires slightly(or huge) replace called slip streaming. This purely artwork for XP interior the interim, I nonetheless not got here upon for others operating equipment yet. There also been a document that you won't be able to use the pagefile on the domicile windows. i have provided you with the procedures to do the slip streaming(i have search for it randomly). good success...

Yes you can, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. First off, you can only use it on the machine you installed it from or a machine exactly like it. Secondly the computer you are trying to use to boot into your external drive needs to have a motherboard compatible with booting off of an external usb drive. You need to access the BIOS using F2, F10, or DEL. Hope that helps------

yes you can. a lot of bios settings on modern machines give the option to boot from a usb device set it to the first boot, if it is not connected (or you don;t press a key to boot from this(pending on the bios) then it will default to the 2nd boot device which will be your harddrive, failing that, there is always a matter of editing your boot ini file to include this (warning. some good knowledge is needed to do this)

Alternatively, if you want multi os boot then install it to your harddrive

Yes, but you will need to go into the BIOS (usually Del key when you power on the PC) and set the primary boot drive to USB. Doesn't work on all computers.

uhm... i think you can but im not really sure, you could try

and if it did work u cant automatically choose where to load your os but you have to do a little tweaking with the bios, everytym u want to load ur os frm the usb, u have to change the boot sequence from the bios and that's it
