Ask them to let you get an easier pet to start and show them that you can take care of that properly. You could get a rabbit or a guinea pig - they're easy to keep, live in a cage, don't have to be walked or trained.

Dogs require a lot of time, energy and money to take care of properly. If the dog isn't properly trained, it can chew up your house and your stuff. If it's not housebroken, it can ruin your floors and your furniture. Your parents may assume that you'll get bored with the dog when you start playing sports and dating and go away to college. You can't keep a dog in a dorm or in most apartments. They don't want to be stuck taking care of a dog for 12 years if you can't handle it.

A good pup can cost $1000 or more. Even "free" dogs cost money to take care of. A crate, books and supplies can cost up to $300. Puppy shots are $200, then $100 a year for boosters. Annual Heartworm test and preventative medication $100. Professional trainer $600 and up. Going on vacation? Boarding kennel $40/day. Spaying? $250. If you can't afford to pay for a good dog, maybe you can't afford to maintain one either?

BEFORE you get any dog you should read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Parents always try to give their kids everything they want. Tell them for your birthday you want a puppy. Leave the room immediately. While you wait for your birthday make sure they see you looking at pictures of puppies in the computer. Go to the library and check out books that has to do with puppies and their care. Make sure you leave them around so they can see them. Draw some pictures of puppies and start writing names you like. Every week show them how interested you are on a puppy and learn something about the breed you want. While in the dinner table tell them a random fact. Not too much, don't over do it. You do not want to give them the chance to tell you NO. When your birthday comes clean a spot in your room a week before and make sure you tell your mom that is where the puppy kennel will be. if mom is convince, she will take care of Dad.

Puppies are notj ust cute and adorable. They are LOTS OF HARD WORK. They chew on everything, use the bathroom on everything, and sometimes you just want to give them away, when I wanted a dog I started being more responsibla around the house, cleaning, washing dishes, stuff like that, and that showed how responsible I was, and they got me one. You can't tell them you'll be responsible when u get the puppy, be like that before. But let them know with little hints you really want one, but don't keep bringing it up, or they will wait and tourtue you, or, it feels like torute.
Puppies are great!!!!
good luck

If your dad says no to having a puppy, ask for a smaller pet (hamster, guinea pig, etc.) that you can use to show him that you will be responsible for its care. Once you show that you will take care of something smaller, he may decide that you can handle a puppy.

Just be aware that puppies are a HUGE responsibility. They need exercise every day, they make messes in the house, they must be taught obedience, and they cost money to feed and care for. Is there something that you can do to earn a few dollars to show that you can pay for your puppy's care? This would also go a long way to proving to your dad that you are serious about wanting to care for a pet.

Do a fish first so you can prove how responsible you are.
Puppies grow into dogs that aren't cute. I really think you sound not mature enough to have a puppy. I'm with your dad.
Go pet dogs at the pound on the weekend or go to a dogpark.
You can get a dog when you move out on your own.

Prove to him you can be responsible. Take on some responsibility to show him this. If that does not work walk around the house for a week with a leash and walk , talk , brush , feed , and play with a imaginary dog. But you have to make it believable. Like you really believe there is a dog there.

I would SHOW him first how responsable you are with out him knowing its for the dog. Ask your parents if theres anything around the house you can do to help out. Clean your room make your bed,do all your homework, help with dinner take out trash. Then after you do that for a while you can ask him again. Good luck Puppys are ALOT of work

Just keep begging him. Daddys always get there daughters what they want eventually. A little bit of tears every once in a while won't hurt either. Leave little fake diaries around talking about how much you want one and how upset you are that your dad won't let you. After doing that for a while try to get him into pet stores somehow just to look. One day you will be walking out with one...

Respect your pops! I won't allow animals in our home either. Not only do you have to pay more each month for dog food, you have to get their shots, neuter them, take them for daily walks, when it's cold outside they come in and make a mess of the house, they stink, and POOP! Did I mention Poop. Ya, picking up dog poo is disgusting. Good luck, I don't think you will be getting a dog anytime soon. By the way, stop asking him. Nobody likes a nag! Just get one when you move out.

My friend had the same problem... what she did was...
1. sucked up to him and made him feel bad about how he had a dog and loved it but he won't let her have one to love and teach her responsibility.
2. He finally said yes but she had to write an essay about 3 dogs that would not be good for her family.

Hope this helps you. And good luck!
