I have a parakeet and I put newspaper in the bottom of her cage, and recently she has been chewing it up into little pieces. Why is she doing this? Thanks.

Having a female parakeet myself, i know they tend to chew alot. But If she is shredding up the paper she is probably going to nest. Female parakeets will lay eggs without breeding but the eggs wont hatch. However you can go to any local pet shop and buy a cuttle bone, which is the inner shell of an 10 legged squid like sea creature that has no backbone. She will chew on it and it will supplement her with a lot of minerals and calcium, and it wears down her beak. So you should try a cuttle bone, and she'll probably stop but she may be getting ready to lay an egg even though she didn't breed.

for no other reason than just to do it..my 5 do that. i put foil,,they chew. the pet shop sells the sand paper that goes at the bottom of the cage..try that but they'll chew the edges of it too.all birds shed paper that's in their cage. the only thing i can say is to not put paper and get into the habit of cleaning the tray every day......m

to be safe i would get a litter for the cage and consider getting some toys maybe even a "bird nest kit"-to keep busy. parakeets love mirrors and mine enjoyed playing with bells and ladders. a good fruit and seed treat will give something to chew on.gotta have exercise!

The bird is bored. try getting some toys (without mirrors if you want to handle it much) and some millet twigs available at the pet store and if you dont already have one it needs a cup for gravel or a cuddle bone. birds need to have something to chew on to help keep their beaks worn down, thats the cuddle bone, the gravel is needed for digestion and the toys are just to play with usually pieces of wood or rope are preferred.

My parakeets used to do that! Well they love chewing on things so maybe thats why their chewing it up.. I suggest you put regular(unused) printer paper because newspaper is dirty and they could get sick.

That's just something they do! Maybe she's bored. You can get a certain kind of shell at the pet store that they like to to chew on, too.

Sometimes they just like to chew. You can give them a cuttle bone to chew on, they sell them at your local pet store. Make sure you pet has gravel for good digestion.

Maybe she wants something to chew on-like a chew toy-, or she needs fiber.

I stick some celery through the cage wires.The butt cut end facing the bird.

She's bored - buy her some toys that can hang from her cage.
