The can was invented around 1810. The dedicated can opener wasn't introduced until the late 1850s.

I would think the can came first. Think about it. What would be the use of a can opener if there were no cans?

The can came first. The can opener wasn't invented till 30 years afterwards. Since they originally were issued for the army, soldiers already had bayonets with which to open them.

The can. It took them another 20 or so years to come up with a real can opener (most used a knife or a bayonet)
