If you can, try to find a bandana on the larger size, bigger than the typical 22x22 in size. That way the tails will stand out. If you can get a hold of a non-cotton one, such as silk or a sufficiently similar fabric, as that would make it look more authentic.

You should also consider bandanas without the typical paisley print. That tends to be a more modern version in the West. Instead, try to find either solid colours or with simple patterns. (Stripes would be good.)

I think that the stereotypical style is a triangle fold with the diagonals tied behind the head. Wear this to where the folded edge goes over the forehead and not above it.

Fold the bandana in half so it looks like a triangle, then hold the triangle so that the hypotenuse, the longest end, is facing down. Put that part on your forehead, and tie the rest at the back of your head. Use bobby pins to hold it in place.
