My maiden name is Montes and I always thought it meant mountains...Does it?

Not exaclty. Montes means hills. Such last name is originally from Spain.
Montaña means Mountain.

ummmmmmmm not in english but in french the verb "monter" means to climb... as in to climb stairs... and when you conjugate "monter" with "tu"
( which means you - used with friends relatives and children - )
it becomes " montes" because... so your maiden name might means you climb
