I live in Thailand and often go to the Mae Sai Elephant camp where the elephants are trained to paint. There are 9 elephant artists currently at this camp. Their paintings sell from anywhere between $25 - $3000 for charity events. They sell most of them through the gift shop. I was given a guided tour by the art teacher at the camp. Elephants cannot distinguish colors, only tones. The elephant mahout (person who takes care of the elephant/rides ontop of the elephant) dips the brush in paint, (mahout chooses the color) and hands the brush to the elephant to paint a brush stroke. The elephant I saw was painting flowers - he painted only the green stems on about 50 sheets of paper, then started again with red petals and did all 50 again to get flowers, then they were put on sale. Each elephant has their own style. This camp was inducted into the Guiness book of World Records last year for having the most elephants painting a mural at one time.
The proceeds are supposed to go to taking care of the elephants, but after meeting the owner of the camp and having to wear sunglasses to block out the sparkle of all of the jewels he was wearing, I think a fair amount goes to the owner as well.
by the way - elephants are intensly smart and really do look you in the eye - each with their own personality. Very adorable!!

ya, on TV an elephant painting a picture. And without telling proffessional painters, they came in to critique it. They said it was a very good abstract. LMAO not kidding. The hosts got a good laugh when they told the painters it was an elephants.

Komar and Melamid. Two Soviet era conceptual artists did this in Thailand sometime in the late eighties or early nineties (I might be wrong on the dates). It basically was similar to adopting a greyhound dog only elephants that were used as cheap labor then tossed aside. They had them paint pictures to set up a fund to insure their survival.

Try the OREGON ZOO our elephants used to paint, and so did our monkeys. They used to sell the art in the gift shop.
