Hi,

My cat always backs up to me and stands with its back paws on my feet when it wants a stroke. I understand that cats take social vocabulary like needing and purring from their kitten-hood. And I also realise that I have encouraged this behaviour with attention. But I just don’t see where she got the idea from in the first place?

Any ideas?

Sounds adorable. Nothing wrong with it.

The sex answer was correct. When a cat backs up to you like that it is a sexual invitation, just be flattered. Oh, and if your cat starts having sex with a blanket don't have a heart attack like my husband and ask if we need to punish him.....sheesh.

cats sometime see stuff and kind of pick it up it is also possible that it tries to get as close as it can to get your attention so the first time she happened to get in that spot and get your attention and affection you responded so that could have made it think
if it always does that it will always get the attention and affection that it wants from you

It's trial and error! Cats are really smart, and they learn by trial and error. Once they do something and it gets the response they were looking for, they'll keep doing it.

my kitty, Jack, does the same thing. i think it may just come with their behavior. hes never been around any other cats and its just something he picked up on his own. we don't have to learn how to smile so its something like that is my gues.

It's because he wants you to launch him across the room with your foot. Just kidding.
