Because 90% of people who come to yahoo answers don't know anything about maintaining for the health of their dog. The best advise to give them is to go to the vet so the dog can be properly cared for.

Dogs cant talk to express what is ailing them, people can. Does it not make sense to take your beloved pet to someone who can rule out a physical problem before making rash decisions on your own? I have been a dog owner for over 40 years and the place to start is at the vets.

Because people take the health of their animals as serious as they do themselves. If I was a qualified vet asst, or a vet, I could answer things much better. Most of us speak on experience being pet owners. In the long run, its always best to have the doctor check out your pet.

I beg to differ with you. Some people take their own health care very seriously and also consider their pet's health care just as serious. I've been a dog lover/owner for overr 30 years. I've seen alot, been through alot, but that doesn't make me all knowing. My boys still get run to the vet or the emergency hospital if need be. I need to sleep at night and could not thinking they were potentially seriously ill.

Mostly because I don't want to give bad advice.

Here's a list of other reasons why I usually say "go to the vet".

Your dog is pooping blood - could be parvo, or a blockage
Your dog is pooping worms - could be worms
Your dog is puking a lot - could be a blockage or poisoning
Your dog has a mysterious lump - could be cancer
Your dog fell off your 3rd story balconey - could have broken bones or internal injuries
Your dog got hit by a car - could have broken bones or internal injuries
Your dog won't eat - could be a lot of things
Your dog won't drink - could be very serious
Your dog has a broken leg - probably hurts like hell.

There's a lot of reasons why I say that. Probably most or all of them are valid.

A vet is a professional, qualified doctor who has plenty more tools and education on the canine health issues. Some illness are potentially life threatening and some breeds are more sensitive to some issues than other breeds, so you're best bet is ALWAYS to consult your vet if you are not sure of something.

First, do you know your dogs body and anatomy as well as your own? If not, then an individual schooled in veterinary medicine is certainly better qualified to assess whether a dog is in need of medical attention or not.

Furthermore, a dog can't tell you when it needs to see a vet as clearly as you can tell yourself when you need to see a doctor.

Myself, I'd rather pay the office visit to find out nothing is wrong then see my dog sick or suffer.

well first of all if someone doesn't know the answer they shouldn't even try to answer the question, and second dogs are dif from humans in so many ways, and last the vet knows best.
