Chicken pox is more than just the spots--the fever and nausea and general discomfort can keep people awake, even if they're normally good sleepers. Getting rid of the itching doesn't make the disease go away; it just gets rid of the most annoying symptom.

It should pass in about a week. If he's *really* having trouble sleeping, like he can't sleep at all, or he's feeling too sick to stand up or eat, then you need to get him looked at by a doctor.

Yeah and just wait until the sore throat and vomiting starts nothing stays down. Hope your kids are young cuz they dont complain like us adults do. They will feel better in about 3 days then they will look icky while the bumps scab over. This too shall pass.

The best to help with itching and discomfort from the chicken pox is an oatmeal bath. It will help with the itching and also help out with drying out the pox sooner, so recovery is faster. You should be able to find it and any drug store.
