I do a vigorous routine of pushups, inverted chinups, and crunches. I used to take one day off inbetween. But sometimes I still feel tired after 48 hours of rest. Would it be beneficial to take 72 hours of rest inbetween workouts sometimes? You know, one more day once in a while. Would I lose any gains? Someone told me that it might even give my muscles more time to rest. Therefore my next workout would be more productive. I might see better gains. True?

I think you need to look more at your sleeping paterns and nutrition intake. You could still be sore, but you shouldn't be tired. Make sure you are getting 7-8hrs of sleep a night and taking in at least 1 gram of protein per pound of your body weight. You should be eating about 5-6 smaller meals per day, rather than 3. Also read up on what kind of foods to eat. Mens fitness just had an article that said fish is best at lunch because the protein digests more slowly and helps you feel more full through the day. 48 hrs is the right rest period, you may be losing something (though little) with a 72 hr rest.

I think that you should shorten your vigorous routine of your workouts to a shorter time that way your body doesn't hurt as much and you add a bit more exercise each day. You need to exercise a bit each day, it's not good to take rests then go all out the next day. It would also help if you eat healthy, and get enough rest.

I wouldn't take that much time off. If you continue your routine for long enough your muscles will adapt and be ready for the challenge. Its just like running. You start off and after the first time it hurts the next day but if you keep at it for a month you can run everyday without feeling anything.

48 hours is perfect, it is enough for the muscle to regenerate, and if you are looking fot getting the best do it afer 48 hours. youll get better results, because once you break down a muscle with excercise, it re builds stronger and the more you break it down the stronger and bigger it will regenerate, so you might be tired but you have to suck it up, warm up a bit and i guarantee youll get your strenght back, its juat a matter of getting used to it

It's okay to do every once in a while but I think two days rest is supposed to be the norm.

I think one or two days the most is ideal. Any more than that may cause you to get lazier and lazier!
