I have a 5 year old autistic son who is non-verbal. He, like many autistic children, will sometimes start laughing long and hard for no apparent reason. Are there any autistic people out there who can shed some light on this? Is something actually funny, or is it just an undirected urge to laugh?

Likely he is hearing things so he is either psychic or autistic, there are spiritual powers that are now covered as insanity.

Autistic children (and adults) look at the world in a much different way than we do. A laugh from a 5yr old says he sees something funny. St Francis of Assisi was said to have seen the world upside down, which may be the reason he championed the Animal Kingdom. Also note that the incident of Autism in Silicon Valley is unusually high-it has been attributed to very smart people marrying other very smart people. If this is you-don't worry-enjoy your little son, he sounds happy.

I worked with Autistic children and adults. Sometimes they may laugh because they find something funny that you may not think is funny; a sound, a color, a shape etc...Sometimes they laugh when they are nervous or scared. Sometimes they are repeating a laugh that they just heard or a laugh from an hour or a day ago. As you know there is a spectrum of autism and no two people are alike.

As I understand it, autistic people have a lot of trouble understanding other people's point of view. So at a guess, he thought of something funny, and like any 5-year old it made him want to laugh, but unlike a non-autistic 5 year old he has no idea that other people will find this upsetting.

My ten year old autistic son does the same thing but I don't know why for sure! I think he is just thinking about something funny!

Molly you are an ***! Just because you are the parent of an autistic child doesn't mean that you automatically know everything about autism! Apparently you have never met anyone with autism!

He's five. Most five year olds (autistic or not) will often laugh at nothing (or what seems like nothing to us.) Sometimes even the most un-funny things can have a 5 year old rolling on the ground laughing. It should be nothing to worry about, and maybe try saying "What's so funny?" or "That's not funny." Good luck.

Maybe the reason is not apparent to you but it could be to him.Autism causes people to see things you do not. They are more perceptive to some things than the "average person",I had a friend who has an autistic daughter and she loved the cooking network and would choose one phrase and repeat it until you did the same then laugh at us,she probably played a joke on us in her mind -NOBODY knows what is really in antbody elses mind! To sslowbliss... Autistic people CAN form Whole Sentences and Phrases! My Mom taught our friends daughter to say blessing and thankyou ,please and to ask for her own side orders at Checkers! All auticstics are not alike,Most can do exceptional thing such as sing songs by listening to the radio, play concert pianos etc...As I said NOBODY knows exactly what is in thier minds! Just know your son probably finds something he hears or sees as funny to him and do not worry as lond as he is healthy, and try to work w/ him as much as you would a "normal"child because you will be surprised at what they can learn!!And maybe even teach you!!God Bless You and good luck!

We have to dissect autism for a minute. Autism is basically a disorder that hinders the mind from reaching certain mental states. Laughing can be an involuntary reaction of the mind. Funny is perceived differently for everyone, what may be funny to you may not be funny to someone else. You can test this by recreating the scene or whatever he is laughing at, to see if you get the same reaction. If I was you I wouldn't worry, Laughter is universal language of the soul : )

sure they are widespread, do no longer problem its no longer a demonstration that he's responding to inner stimuli (auditory/seen halluncinations). I easily have 3 sons all on the autistic spectrum and that they try this. FYI- I try this TO! (additionally autistic), yet a lot of cases mine are an beside the point reaction to some thing.

autistic children live in another world in their minds, because of this, there isnt much information on why they do some of the things they do. most of them cant answer simple questions or have a conversation. i do know that even normal children of that age will stare into space and laugh for no reason. the imprtant thing you can do to help, is try as hard as you can to make a connection now, in your world. if he laughs for no reason, try to make eye contact and laugh along with him, this brings him into your world and lets him know you laugh too.
