Genesis 3:7 Adam and Eve put fig leaves because they were sexually seduced by the devil. If they would have eaten an apple they would had covered their mouths.

it means put a cover or a disguise over something.
back in the day, statues of people were made showing them naked. later on, they were censored by putting a leaf over their privates.

In Adam & Eve's case, they were trying to cover up their sin and nakedness. (And they used probably the roughest material available at the time to do it.)
