There is a product called bitter orange that is a very good deterrent. Also, when your dog is in the house, while you are training him, tie the leash to your belt loop, that way you always know where he is.
There is an excellent book called Good Owners, Great Dogs - it goes over all of these things in depth. Keep in mind, that dogs are not "bad", they just need to be worked with :)

Dogs will naturally chew on everything that is in their way, what you can do is make sure the dog knows not to chew on shoes, toys, etc. Keep shoes in one area and whenever the dog goes to that area say something along the lines of "No, No shoes".. same with toys... repetition is the key, make sure you keep letting the dog know that shoes are off limits... offer the dog lots of dog toys and bones, chewies, that are easily accessible for the dog. One trick... if you don't want your dog to chew on electrical cords, which they tend to do, rub a bar of soap along the cord, the taste will be unwanted and it will teach the dog not to chew on cords. Just remember that repetion of commands is the key

Smack him and tell him "Bad Dog!" then give him something he can chew and praise him with lots of love. Tell your son to pick up his toys or the dog will eat them. This works great at my house. My daughter's room is clean and the husband doesn't leave dirty socks in the living room any more! The dog only gets in trouble if yummy plastic toys are laying around or he's out of doggy things to chew on.

Purchase bitter apply spray from your pet supply store. It is non toxic but dogs hate the taste. You can just spary it on what he is chewing on to get him to stop. It shouldn't hurt your shoes and he'll learn to leave them alone rather quickly. We used it when my dog was a puppy and now we can leave anything out and he doesn't chew (except his toys of course).

DO NOT hit a puppy on the nose!!!
I put each and every one of my puppies through training and obedience classes!
If that's not what you want to do, fine.
But when you use 1 word all the time for the same thing,
for example OFF!
If you yell really loud and in a deep voice,
the puppy tends to freeze. OFF!!!!!!
If he stops and walks away from the object, give him a treat. Remember to praise!
Or try bitter apple! You can get it at PetsMart or Petco.
Dogs don't learn as quickly when you hit!!

My dog used to chew on the legs of the coffeetable, till I put rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, and put tape around it onto the leg of the coffeetable. If you have a small child, I wouldnt' advise using rubbing alcohol on any of his toys, though.
