I don't think it's a good diet at all. Yeah, it may help you lose weight, but have you looked into the kidney damage it can cause? All you eat is protein, which in moderation can be good. But too much can damage your kidneys. I had a friend of mine lose like 50 lbs using it, but she went into kidney failure because of it and nearly died. It's a bad diet. All fad diets are. If you want to lose weight, just cut back on what you are eating, and what you do eat, make sure it is good for you. Trust me. It worked for me. I lost over 50lbs in just 3 months that way and I'm only about 10lbs from my goal weight. It was EASY. If I had exercised I'm sure I could have lost more, but that just wasnt' in my time schedule, but if it is in yours, then go for it!!

There have been studies done on the effectiveness of Atkins. You do initially lose weight faster on Atkins, but over the long hall (usually a year) the weight loss on Atkins and a more traditional low fat diet is about the same. However, Atkins generally proves to be unsuccessful because the majority of people can not maintain the lifestyle. Once you reintroduce carbs back into your diet you will gain the weight back.

The only proven long term method of weight loss is lifestyle modification. You eat lean meats, complex carbs and fruits and vegetables. But no diet will work if you are unable to maintain the program long term.

The Atkins diet can be extremely dangerous. I does work in helping you lose weight, but you usually pay the price in over all poor health. By eliminating all carbs, you start to consume more protein and fat. It's been proven in studies that people who used the Atkins diet for long periods of time actually had a higher chance of getting heart disease and diabetes than they did when they were fat. Dr Atkins himself died of heart disease, probably due to a poor diet! Your best bet is to talk to your doctor, and together you can decide what the best way for you to lose weight would be.

If you really want to know, read the book. You will get advice from here of people that do not fully understand the diet. I was on it and I lost 55lbs. I stopped when I fell into depression during marital problem. I chose not to go back to it. However, the concept of the diet is to let your body tell you what it needs. But as I said, the paperback version of the book is 7 bucks, buy it and read it.

Noticing someone try to use the argument that Dr. Atkins died of heart diesease it an example of what I said. He did of an infection around the heart because of too much fluid around the heart. That was not caused by his diet. So, get the book, read the book, and decide for yourself.

I think the concept of Atkins to jump start weight loss is a good idea but you should make an overall lifestyle change with eating healthier and understanding the difference between good and bad carbs. If you add back good carbs into your diet in moderation and exercise regularly you will definitely see a difference

I think that the concept of "going on a diet" is complete BS. You need to change your diet permanently to truly have lasting effects. I have heard that the Atkins diet is a good way to quickly lose weight, but over the long term, it is unhealthy.

It is a great kick start to use if you want to start losing weight. I've done it twice when I wanted to start eating healthier and lose a few pounds. Both times I lost 12 pounds in 14 days and I wasn't hungry. I did have sugar free jello and pudding during the initial time which technically you're not supposed to have during the induction two weeks. But quite frankly after two weeks I missed crunchy food so I added more veggies and needed fruit when I wanted something sweet. So use it for a kick start but to really lose or be healthy you need to find what works for you. If you're not happy with your way of eating, you are doomed to fail. I love potato chips so I need to find a healthy alternative to them and find rice cakes do the trick. Not the best thing in the world but so much better than the chips. You can make a list a mile long of good foods so eat up, just eat healthy and remember to MOVE. I bet you'll find just a few small tweaks in your way of eating and living will help you to a great start on the road to healthy living.

Take Scoobyd3's advice. If you do the diet correctly, you do not eliminate carbs. You will lose weight. The people who die or get ill took other people's advice instead of reading the book and doing the diet correctly.
