I'm 24, American female. I would prefer non-demoninational or at least a non-"preachy" program. I've done a lot of research but would like opinions from some who have been there and can recommend a safe place where you actually can make a difference.

Maybe you should contact http://www.heartbeat.org.za that has a reputable programme in South Africa. Our own organisation also support community projects, e.g Arts Therapy with traumatised children, but no orphanages at present.

I have not myself, but I was going to join the Peace Corps before I had children. But I believe you need to have a BA to go...
