Neither free weights nor machines are better than the other. In fact, most people who want to gain strength and endurance will use a combination of both. They both have their advantages. Free weights will exercise the main muscle groups as well as several smaller groups around the main one which are primarily used for stabilization. This will help to develop your overall physique. Machines, however, allow you to specifically target the main muscle groups and do more work with them with less fatigue. You should use a combination of exercises with both of them to develop the whole package.
