I am attempting to paint my home. However, I have really ugly brick that is black and burnt sienna colored. The roof is done is tan and grey and the garage door and sun room are done to match the roof in a taupe color. I also have some aluminum trim and gutter work that are cream colored. I would like to add some shutters and paint the front door with an accent color, but I am at a loss as to what color to choose.

All of the colors you already have are neutral ones. So choose any color you like for the accents. In fact, the shutters could be done in one color, and the door in another. I just got through looking at a bunch of pictures showing French Colonial homes with brick and wood exteriors and with shutters. In each case, the shutters and door were painted different colors, and the effect was lovely. One had green shutters and a mustard-colored door; another had red shutters and a green door. What colors do you like? Choose something complementary from your own tastes.

I have seen this color brick on many southern California homes and agree it was unattractive in the 70's and very dated now. You can really change the look of the home with a strong accent color like a gingerbread or rusty colored red. Just chose colors like yours for a single story house up the street. The only thing they wouldn't take my advice on was painting the garage doors which are white and face the street in the cream trim color. But, the shutters, front door and brick in the rusty red, with cream trim turned out to be a real show stopper and they get compliments almost daily!

If it were my house I would find a brick colour I liked and actually paint the brick. Then use the same colour as an accent colour. Probably a beautiful red.

i would paint the brick it's self...best way to paint brick is to spray it with a color you would like the mortar lines to be ... then use a roller lightly soaked with paint to roll over the brick as the main color....
