This is not a biblical answer, it is just my thoughts on the matter, but
When a group such as the Catholics, demand that in order to become a preacher ( I cannot use the word father here, the bible forbids it) that this man must be celebate.
That rule on its own, would work if the Catholics had stayed as small as the number of men who would be able to live this way entered into the order.
But they had and still have illusions of grandeur. Families who wanted status in the church would litterally force their sons into this line of work, they certainly would not have felt on their own to do this.
As time went on, it became known as a haven (safe place) for men who had a weakness for molesting and raping young boys. Because the seminaries were full of young boys, away from the safety net of their own families.
It got so out of hand, that when it did finally catch the media attention, they had years and years of abuses to report on.
I do hope and pray that now that it is out in the open , that the church would do what is right, and eliminate the safety net of the pedifiles.
And yes, I know it happens in other churches, but not to the extent of the protection of the violators, as the church has done.

The was a recent book published about child/boy abuse in the Jewish community and even a murder in the New York state. But the author was totally ostrascised from the Jewish community and shouted down by his family etc.
There is rampant abuse among the Hare Krishna community as well as other groups and cults. I hate to think what abuse goes on in the Muslim community where some girls are still circumsised, but those facts will never see the light of day in our lifetime.
Here in Australia there is terrible child abuse and domestic violence by the Aboriginal community against its own people.
If anything, the Catholics are more open to acknowledging the wrong done, even though reluctantly, and doing something, eventually, to resolve it. Its a great shame that other religions or communitys arent willing to "clean house" and come to grips with their demons and skeketons in their closets, both past and present.

It's no more prevalent among Catholic priests than among clergy of other faiths.
What's more, sex abuse by clergy isn't even as prevalent as it is within society at large.
The group of people most likely to molest kids are the kids' own parents and other relatives.
In second place are teachers and other school staff.
Clergy aren't too high on the list, actually -- the media's portrayals notwithstanding.
I think the Catholic priests get the most media coverage over it -- partly because they're priests and they're supposed to be "good guys," and partly because the Church holds opinions on certain moral matters that the liberal secular media just can't stand.

Child abuse has no religion or gender, open your eyes and you can see it everywhere from all walks of human life, it just seems like it is only in the Catholic church because the Catholics are the oldest religion around and is more in the public eye, I am baptist and I can assure you it goes on everywhere, it's the work of evil

Because the Spirit of God is not in the Catholic church.
Study what Martin Luther said.
In the late 20th century, and early 21st, the Roman Catholic Church was confronted with a series of allegations of sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests (who are all male) and by members of the various religious orders (both male and female). Many of these allegations led to successful prosecutions. For the purposes of this article, these cases are referred to as the Roman Catholic sex abuse cases.
An increasing number of cases were and are being reported by the press, after the victims decided to disclose what had been concealed by the church. Many cases involved orphanages, schools and seminaries, where children were in the care of clergy. This resulted in a form of abuse similar to that experienced by children in incestuous relationships (see Incest).
In many cases the crimes, when reported to them, were covered up by high-ranking authorities of the Church, and the perpetrators simply moved to another location, often with continued access to children. This has fueled criticism of the Church and its leadership especially as there are still ongoing refusals by some high-ranking Church authorities to disclose sex abuse information to government authorities.
Beyond the toll in loss of staff and credibility, the financial cost of these cases has never been fully calculated. Estimates of what the church has paid out since the first major scandals broke in the 1980s range from about $300 million to $1 billion.
No one in the church has an official tally of the number of lawsuits filed before this year. Sylvia Demarest, a Dallas attorney who has been tracking abuse claims, said at least 1,500 U.S. priests have been publicly accused since the 1980s.

In a male dominated feudal organization like the RC Church,I think it is probably more prevalent.
The enviornment excludes women,& shelters them from the world in general.
To say they do'nt know any better is being kind.
Lets call a spade a spade, it is not an affair or child abuse when a priest betrays his holy orders, it is rape.& it is a crime.

More people can relate to the Catholic church because it's the most widespread religion. Their beliefs are supposed to reflect God's holiness, but instead they get tangled up in worldly sins.
