Well... it depends on what else you're eating, what kind of exercise you do, how your metabolism works... But, in my opinion, a snack of 400 calories is a lot. 400-500 calories should be contained in one meal...

What makes something "fattening" or what starts adding on the pounds has a lot to do with how physically active you are. Lets say you run a mile a day and burn up 500 calories. And throughout the day you eat a total of 2000 cal. You burned up 500 of those calories. So they will not affect you, You're also moving about during the day too, so that helps burn them cals, but if you want to maintain or lose weight you need to exercise to burn up all those exec calories. Any unused calories is usually stored as fat cells. When looking at the nutritional facts, pay attention to how much of it is Sat. Fat and Unsat. Fat. Most fast food and a LOT of premade-type meals are higher in Saturated fat than cooked meals. (Sat. Fat is a solid at room temperature, that is why it's not the greatest for you) the reason it's used so often is because it's a great preservative. But keep in mind the SOURCE of it all. Peanut Butter is kinda high in the daily percentage of Sat. Fat, BUT it is plant based. More "natural" than say...a frozen burrito. Cooked (mostly home cooked) meals are the best thing, no more boxed/canned/ or frozen meals. Sorry this was so long, to answer your question directly: eat as many calories as you want, what makes it fattening is when you don't burn those calories. So take a daily walk or run, just stay active.

It depends on whether you are trying to lose weight or to maintain your current weight. As a general rule, however, you need to burn more calories than you take in to lose weight. So stop putting butter on your chocolate and try to eat smaller portions of the high calorie foods and you will be okay. If you are trying to lose weight and need more guidance, you might consult weight watchers (which is where my wife and I go). They have a website with many articles and much information.

It doesn't matter, it depends on how much of it you eat. If you eat a little of high calorie foods compared to a lot of low calorie foods, it ends up being the same.

About 400 per meal is not too much. I should only be taking in about 1400 calories a day.

A lot of calories depends on how many calories you consume in a day. The basic diets are 1,200 cals. 1,500 cals. and 2000 cals. You should pick a diet that suits you.
