I run everyday now, but if you're trying to lose weight fast, try walking uphill (highest % incline) for 3 minutes and sprinting for 1 minute. And work your way up to longer sprints. I lost 40 lbs in 7 months by starting this way.

Running burns more calories but it is harder on your back and joints. Walking doesn't burn many calories. You will lose weight if you alternate running and walking. Run for a lap then walk for one then run again etc. You keep burning calories but you aren't as hard on your body!

**I have to respectfully disagree with J, if you carry weights while you run or walk it only increases your calorie burn by a little (i'm talking like 5 calories) but it greatly increases your chances of being injured! (trust me, I had a back injury). Free weights are good to use, but use them in other exercises. Curls, tricep kickbacks etc. DON'T try to carry them while you walk or run!**

start with walking if it's been some time, then work your way up to running. Incorporate arm or leg weights after it becomes easy for you.

I would say running, but only because it does do more to the key element to weight loss...increase in muscle mass. Your leg muscles are your largest mass of muscle. You increase muscle size and it will increase your bodies need for energy. So I would say that of the two running would do more for muscle mass increase.

running uses more calories but is harder on the joints and harder to do. see which one works better for you by trying both.
You can even go back and forth. Walk awhile then run awhile then walk awhile.

walking will burn more fat but running will burn more calories. you really dont need to run for weight loss. working out on a treadmill (walking) at 70% of your maximum heart rate will burn fat and cause you to lose weight.
