I'm not putting down any religion or beliefs, i'm just curious.
statistically speaking, if every child born is the reincarnation of somebody who died, shouldn't the population of the earth be in the single digits?

Well it's really complex. Universal soul is the universe according to Hindus. You can say a new soul is "created" from the universal soul/conscience. Although I'm a Hindu I do not believe in the concept of rebirth. However I understand that it was just a concept like heaven and hell to keep people under control. "If you're bad you'll be born as a worm" etc.etc. Reincarnation of soul complex concept and I won't comment on it. I don't believe in rebirth because I don't think I'm paying for the crimes of my past lives.

No, some souls reach enlightenment, some souls are in the shadows awaiting rebirth, others do not return as humans, they may have disregarded the other living things of our earth and are now experiencing life on a different plane.
Souls are always in a state of flux. Being born, dieing, waiting to be born again. As a breath of air is drawn in and exhaled . The time of a soul is as a breath to eternity.

I believe that you choose what happens to you when you die. You can stay in Heaven, come back to Earth or stay here as a ghost. I don't think everyone is reincarnated because not everyone would choose to come back. You might not come back right away, anyway - you may wait years before you come back. It's not like you die and are instantly reincarnated, unless that's what you want...

nope, some believe that with reincarnation, only a part of u is reborn, ur esence per say combined with a new life. in that case, souls would double with every death, enabling the growth in population

You are assuming that we are the only life forms in this universe and that is a very arrogant position to take. There are billions and billions of solar systems out there... why should life be restricted to just ours?

Who says that every soul is from someone previously dead? Our souls had to be born sometime as well so is it not possible that more souls are born fresh everyday as well as reincarnated?

Some born are new souls. Others are souls of those who are not elightened which are reborn. Only enlightened souls escape the cycle.

For me, this is where the concept of "old souls" and "young souls" come in. I feel that the gods are still creating souls.
