I always tip, but it seems sometimes the delivery charge is about the same as the tip. I feel embarrassed to ask the driver if the delivery charge is supposed to replace the tip. So I just tip him anyway. For example, a Chinese Food delivery or a pizza place.

It just seems excessive to me; I'm already tipping the guy AND I have to pay the delivery charge; shouldn't they cancel each other out?

Hey i'm a part-time delivery person for a restaurant and a flower shop. For the restaurant there's no delivery charge, so what i make is the tip but some people are greedy as hell and they know there's no delivery charge and what they give me for a tip is $0. For the flower shop i don't know how much they charge but usually people give me tips, the owner pays $7 per delivery. yeah, yeah LOL

forgot i don't make money off the restaurant deliveries

Yes. Think of it this way - do you tip the pizza delivery guy? Most people do. Even when there's "free delivery" the charge is really built into the cost of the pizza, so you ARE paying for delivery. You can and should tip on top of that - it's an appreciation of the delivery person's service.

The delivery charge should cover the cost of vehicle and all it's associated costs, and towards regular salary of the delivery person. The tip should be just that - a tip to your server (delivery person). If the tip is not necessary, your delivery person will let you know.

i would say it depends on the service, and the amount of the delivery fee. With gas being as high as it is, i'm sure delivery fees are going up but that could be just to cover the cost of vehicles and hiring drivers. Chain restaurants that dont pay thier drivers much i'd tip one of their drivers if my order was delivered promptly. if anyone wanted to charge me more than a couple of bucks to drive five ten minutes, i wouldnt tip.

the charge is something that a company charges,

but you are tipping the delivery person, for his services not the company

The delivery service thinks they can have it both ways. You pay twice???
I don't think so.
