cropping of tails and removal of dew claws is usually done at birth by a professional, repeat professional. If you are planning on allowing your dog to have her puppies at home, consult with your vet to see what you can do, or if a vet tech might be able to be present to provide those services. Dew claws are easily removed later on, when the animal is being spayed or neutered, but as it sounds like your dog is pure breed, that might not be in the future for these pups, so at birth is best. And cropping of the tails is a must at birth. You will want to get them their first vaccinations when they are about 6 weeks old, again 3 weeks after that, and a final one three weeks later. Rabies vaccination when they are about 4 mos old. Your vet should have told you all this before now, so I am concerned that maybe you are trying to go this alone, and that your mom to be may not be getting the proper care she needs at this time. Please, if you don't have experience in this area, don't assume that your female can do this all on her own, and that you do not need to consult a vet before hand. Things happen, and your vet should be familar with the dog and what is going on with her in case of an emergency. It is customary for weekly visits to the vet when she gets along in her pregnancy, so if you have not done so, call your vet today and get an appointment so that they can start monitoring her progress.

What happened to the mother? Do you know? In any case, a pup can make it even from one day old but it will be a lot of work. You will need either an eyedropper or a tiny bottle with a good flow from the Vet to start. The first few times you try to feed, it may seem the pup isn't getting it but keep trying. Feed every two hrs in the day and three hrs or more if the pup cries, overnight. What to feed: At this age, to be sure of nutrients first day before first feeding, give the pup some "Benebac" which is beneficial bacteria designed for canine and helps them especially when they didn't get mother's milk. Then give "Just Born" or "Esbillac" puppy supplement. It's expensive, but you won't need much to start. Before and after each feeding, take a soft damp slightly warm cloth and stimulate the area where the pup would pee. Almost nothing may come out but as you continue to do this and the pup starts to eat, more and more will come out. Stimulate for a full minute if nothing is happening. Then stimulate where it will go number two, which it may not do for a few feedings and won't necessarily do after every feeding. KEEP THE PUP WARM! Either put a heating pad set on low under a few layers of towels and when it is warmed up check to make sure it is not too warm. Put the pup on the towel and you can put a towel over the box. I put a stuffed animal in with mine ( a hairy reindeer) and put the pup up next to this. Keep the pup away from drafts and vents. It's a huge commitment. If you feel like it is too much see if you can find some relief from a volunteer friend or someone with Pit Bull Rescue who can help to feed it for some hrs of the day. There may be a Vet's office where a Vet tech will take it and feed it. GL and hope the pup makes it.

I won't even get into why you have bred your dog without first knowing the answers to these questions.
Discuss this with the vet that will be doing all of this for you.
Vaccinating at 6wks is not recommended as it is too early and will have to be redone. Puppies don't begin to build their own immunities until they are 10wks. These pups will end up having 4 sets of vaccines instead of 3.

Mom should be eating a good quality puppy food now and until the pups are finished nursing.

Make sure the pups stay with mom until they are 8wks. They get protection against disease from mom even if they are only nursing once a day. They also learn very important social skills from mom and siblings so please don't let them go until then.
Even though they may be eating kibble and drinking water by the time they are 5 wks they really need to stay with you until 8 wks.
You can begin to look for homes well before they are ready to go.

Most of your questions need to be dealt with at about 6 to 8 weeks. The cropping of the tails need to be done as soon as possible after 5 weeks before the fusing of the tissues, if you feel them just after they are born you will feel the spaces between and know what i mean, they close together at about 10 weeks. Dew claws can be done at anytime(best to get them done at the same time as spaying or neuter as most vets will put them under for this procedure). The first shots for your puppy's can be done around 6 to 8 weeks, the rest of the shots your vet will tell you the dates of the rest for up to the first year, as it's actually a series of shots.

You need to do the tails and dewclaws at 2-3 days after birth. First Vac and worming should actually be done at around 8 weeks. At six weeks mom's milk will still be fighting diseases, if you get the shots done then they would have to be done 2 weeks later instead of 4. Breeder. Good luck a liter is a lot more work then people realize. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions

If you are going to crop tales and remove the dew claws, they CAN NOT be any older than 3 days old. The best thing to due is talk to your vet. 8 weeks old they can be seperated from their mother, depending on the vet, puppy shots are given in 3 series, they start at 8 weeks old, they also are dewormed at the same time. (I used to work at a vets office)...GOOD LUCK

you do not need to crop poodle tails.
first puppie shots can be started at 6 and then again at 8 weeks of age and your vet will then tell you the next set
some may not even grow dew claws.....alot of dogs now a days through evolution don't even grow their dew claws, but if so, i would ask your vet because it is different for each breed, and they may grow in at different times.

Crop Tails - Put a rubber bands on their tails as soon as they are born and make it extremely tight to cut off the blood flow to their tails, also use maybe 2 or 3 bands.

Dew Claw - You can do it when they are first born but talk to your Vet. about it when you take them to get there shots.

Vaccinate & Deworm - You can take them about a 4 - 6 weeks after they are born.

Crop tails and remove dew claws--2-3 days old. Mom will be upset, but she will get over it. Vaccinate and worm them when they are weaned from mom. About 6 wks old. Hope that helps.
