Do a fire truck theme and depending upon where you live if there is a fire department sometimes you can get them to bring the fire truck over. This is a big hit with the boys and it is free. Also don't forget you could have a bounce house and 4 is the perfect age for them. One thing I did as well was get a fountain they usually use them for champagne but I put punch in it and dry ice. The kids went wild plus I didn't have to poor beverages all day they just stick the cup under the fountain and drink away.

Any sort of theme party, when my son was four, we had a pirates and princess party, where the guests came dressed up. We got pirate balloons and bunting as well as a pirate ship cake and everyone had a fantastic time.
The games we played were pass the pirate parcel, pinata (spelling?) and musical bumps. We also had a face painter that decorated the childrens faces.
The party lasted about 3 hours which was more than enough!

Check out local establishments that specialize in childrens b-day parties.
Otherwise what does he like? For my sons 5th b-day party we did a castle themed b-day party at a park. My son wore a crown, and I had little crowns for the guests. then we had a couple dragon pinatas and sturdy plastic (or wooden) swords so everyone could take turns "slaying" the dragon. I made a castle cake that I found in a cake cookbook...you can find it online though and it is fairly easy to make, just have some skewers on hand.

We did a spongebob one. We found all sorts of spongebob decorations, plates, etc at walmart. I cut out little jellyfish from construction paper and taped them up and then put up dark and light blue streamers to look like water. We found a spongebob pinata (pin-yah-tah) at a local place and we filled it with his favorite candies and small toys like rubber balls, plastic rings etc. The kids loved swinging at that thing. We hung it from the pergola in the back yard. We of course had a spongebob cake made of a bunch of yellow cupcakes put together and decorated (also from Walmart) and chocolate ice cream. We filled the very large kiddie pool and kids were swimming and some were inside watching videos or running in the yard playing. Everyone, even the adults had a good time. Oh, if you can swing it...I even saw a sponebob bouncehouse thing, but I didn't have enough money for that.

Try something fun like a Pirate theme. Pirates are all the rage right now. You could fill sand buckets full of "pirate's gold" to hand out to attendees. They can use the gold to play games at stations through out your house. Or you could hide the gold somewhere in the house and make them go on a treasure hunt with clues at every activity they participate in. At the end everyone can bring home a small treasure of their own.

Many endless opportunities......it just depends on how much you want to spend.........try Chucky Cheese....or maybe having a birthday party at a city park...if that's allowed. You could also talk to a local pizza establishment and ask them.......there's always McDonald's too...some of them may have a room especially designed to have a birthday party in. Best of luck with your little one........

A small bag of random lego pieces for each kid; then tell them to make something (anything). Prizes for the most creative, most accurate, most imaginative engineering solution, most bricks used, first finished or just one of the above.
Psychologically quite interesting too, as some get on with it and others just complain about not having the 'right' pieces...
Also important is lots of space to blow off steam and the right sweets etc so they don't get too hyper.

Disney Cars and Superman are real popular right now. I'd figure out the theme and go from there. Try birthdayexpress.com for more ideas. Good luck!
