Can someone tell me the difference between the county sheriff's office and the constable's office. Doesn't necesarily have to be in Texas, but that is where I've seen it most frequently.

In Texas you are either a Texas Peace Officer or not. If you are, then you are licensed by the State to enforce all State and Federal laws, county and city ordinances. This includes the traffic code.

The department you work for will largely determine what you will be doing. Traditionally the municipal police department has ordinary jurisdiction within that city. The County Sheriff's Office has ordinary jurisdiction within that county. The different constable's offices (multiple) have ordinary jurisdiction within the same county as the sheriff's office, however, they are assigned to precincts, or unincorporated parts of that county. In a large county there can be many precincts.

By virtue of holding a valid Texas Peace Officer's license, the officer has secondary jurisdiction anywhere within the State of Texas. Secondary jurisdiction means that he is expected to act in his capacity as a police officer if he on-views a felony, or a breach of the peace in progress.

Think of them as no different than a police or sheriff's department officer.

Each JP judge has a constable to baliff thier court they hold, serve civil papers, and take care of certian civil issues.

They are regular police and do the regular police stuff, but tend to deal with the local JP judges and more civil stuff.

The bigger the county the more they branch off and do more criminal activities.
