Because - like every other bully - we're paranoid that they might develop a weapons program superior to ours! George Bush (and a lot of other recent Presidents) seem to believe that you'll achieve world peace with guns and ammo.
Why do countries like North Korea, India, Pakistan, and Iran think they need nuclear weapons? Because the U.S.A. has 'em - and those countries see it as their only defense against the planet's newest "evil empire" - the United States of America.
Remember, we're the only country that's ever exploded a nuclear weapon on foreign soil with the full intent of killing as many people as possible. Why should any other country trust us? When you're dealing with a big bully, you do whatever you can to defend yourself, even if it's only the most futile attempt.
(Anyone who's had to put up with being bullied in the schoolyard knows exactly what I'm talking about).
Until the U.S.A. demonstrates a genuine desire to eliminate its own stockpiles of nuclear weapons, other countries will want to stockpile their own. -RKO-

Because 50 some years ago the United States fought a war to keep North Korea from taking over South Korea. North Korea is a dictatorship who could use these weapons on the U.S and her allies like Japan. I do not like the idea of North Korea having anything that could harm a large mass of people. Especially with Kim Jong in charge.

normally, it shouldn't be, but the situation with Kim Jong Il is extremely dangerous. He has absolute power in his country, along with a god-complex
Plus, an open treaty was started in 1968, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. It was signed by almost every country, but North Korea withdrew. Some would agrue this gives too much inherit power to the countries that had nuclear arms before, but the treaty calls for reduction of stockpiles and gradual elimination of all nukes. This doesn't seem realistic, but this is why we care about their weapons program. We're trying to go in the other direction.

Once the unstable Kim has the technology there is nothing to stop him from giving or selling it to out enemies. He is a sworn enemy of the United States that would like nothing more then to see us destroyed. He would have no problems providing Al Queda with the weapons to do just that. If you do not beleive we need to do something now, you have no business complaining about doing nothing when nuclear device goes off in New your, Chicago, LA, or where ever it is going to go off. That is why we need to disarm, N. Korea, Iran, or any other enemies of ours.

Well, we want to remain the biggest kid on the block. We need to if we're to remain a world superpower. So even if limiting other countries' weapons programs by threat may be morally questionable, it's essential to remain a superpower. I'm still not sure what my stance is on our government's policy concerning this issue.

Because Kim Jong Il is a tyrannical despot with some history of unstable behavior. Oh, and also because we're still at war with them. They are a threat to the U.S. and the rest of the world. As a threat, they are definitely our business.

If I know you and I am constantly accusing you of one thing or another, angrily challenging you, calling you every name in the book, and then threaten you...you can ignore it right? But what if after doing all that I pull out a gun and aim it at your head? Would you say it's nobodies business because I haven't pulled the trigger....yet?

Could it be that we're at war with them (since 1950) and stand firm against their stated purpose for unification with S. Korea?
