I know it depends on the type of dishwasher, but where is it usually and is it hard to get to?

Usually the filter is below the impeller, which grinds up the food particles before flushing them down the drain. Often hard to get to and a the bottom of the dishwasher, though it does vary depending on the make and model.

no its not hard to get to, just get the dish washer, unscrew her head and clean out with a spoon some have flip open heads and you need to use a vacuum on them ones,
the dish washer made by the feminist co, well they don't have a filter and tend to clog up with all sorts of C,R,A,P,
you just have to dispose of them and replace the unit
