I personally like Shih Tzus better, but maybe you should do some research and find out which one is better for you.

If it's only a choice between those two, get the shih tzu. Chow chows as a breed have bad temperaments and tend to be mean, even with training.

I do agree, without meaning to insult anyone or hurt any feelings, that Chows are not the most gentle of breeds. I haven't met an overly friendly one yet, and we have a particularly nasty one across our backyard. (He's bitten several people and has to live in their basement now. The poor dog. Stupid people kept letting him loose.) You can't judge a whole breed by only a few dogs, and there's a chance that you'd find a really nice Chow by doing a lot of hard research and asking a *lot* of questions, but it is a general fact with Chows that they aren't great kid dogs.

I would have to say that a Tzu would be a much better option. Happy, playful, small, smart, and generally easy to train.

Whatever you choose, make sure you ask the breeder lots and lots of questions about the puppy's parents. Meet them, and make sure that they are happy, healthy, friendly dogs, too. And get a health guarantee. Most breeders offer them now.

Best of luck!

My friend has a chow chow and it is very sweet toward her, but aggressive toward other people. I used to date a guy a few years ago and his chow chow behaved in a similar manner. They seem to be a "one person" dog. Many apartment complexes do not allow chow chows because they are deemed aggressive. Chow chows also require A LOT of grooming. If you live in a hot climate I do not recommend getting a chow chow for this reason alone. I live in Arizona and my friend's poor chow chow needs to get groomed every month and it isn't cheap!! Her chow chow is really lazy too...not very active. Shih tzu's seem to be sweet dogs for the most part. Smaller dogs tend to have health problems, so be selective when it comes to the breeder.

Jeez, that's not much of a choice. I would NEVER recommend a chow to a famiy with kids. They are not an easy dog to train and can be very determined and aggressive.

Shih tzus can be very hard to house break and need a lot of brushing or trips to the groomer to keep them trimmed short. If these are your only choices, choose the Shih Tzu.

I'd recommend one of the Sporting breeds for a family. My all-time favorite mid-sized dog for kids is the English (or Welsh) Springer Spaniel. They require some grooming, but don't shed too much, are generally great with kids and easy to train. Females are a little bit easier than males, but either should make a terrific pet. They will need a good thirty minute walk every day.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pekingese are great too and need less exercise. They are small, sweet and quiet.

Vizslas, Setters, Labs and Goldens are usually great with kids but they're bigger and are very boisterous until they are about two. Labs shed a LOT.

I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Whatever breed of puppy you decide on DON'T go to a pet shop or buy one off the internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These "breeders" have figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

Find a breed rescue organization by going to www.akc.org - you can get an older dog for less money. Be VERY careful about getting a shelter dog with children that young. You are often adopting someone else's problem dog. And people often lie about the dog's temperament, hoping he'll get a new home that can deal with him.

It all depends on what you want out of the puppy. Chow's are very protective, and they are a 1 person dog. Also, if you own a home - no homeowner company will cover you. Chows are also unpredictable. I have a Chow mix Female.. I love her to death, but she is MY dog.
If you want a lap dog, a fu-fu dog, something to cuddle with Shih tzu's are the way to go. But, they are a lot of responsibility, they need to be groomed and upkeeped. Very Pampered Breed.
Both very wonderful dogs.

Shih Tzus are small, and are easier to take care of, especially if you ever need to live in an apartment.

Chow Chows need lots of grooming, lots of consistent training due to stubbornness, and are not allowed in a lot of housing, due to them being listed as an ''aggressive breed'' (which is false in most cases, Chow Chows are absolute sweethearts, but you cannot convince someone who has their mind set.)

If you only can pick one, then the shih tzu because chows can be mean. However, you might want to look at puggles. They are very cute. They are a mix between a beagle and a pug. They have the colouring of a pug, the face of the beagle and because they are mixed you won't have the barking problems with the beagle or the respiratory problems with the pug. Good luck picking a dog!

hi It would depend on how much time you have to devote to your pet .A shih tzu can be just as mean as a chow can so it totally depends on there up bringing and temperament . You most definitely need to think this through and consider your space now and later . As a dog can live for 14yrs. more or less.

I'd go for shih tzu ..

My friend has a chow chow and she's mean... but it really depends on how you train the puppy.

Good luck.
