It is human nature to view a new group of immigrants negatively because they might have different custom and languages. Eastern European, Russian, Polish, Italian and German came thru Ellis Island. Americans were afraid they not integrate in the melting pot, but they did.

The Irish and Chinese who came to build the railroads in California were discramated, too. The Chinese had to stay months on Angel Island before they are allow entrance. Americans were afraud they might not integrate in the melting pot, but they did.
