Help! I can't open my control panel on my computer. It is windows XP, not professional edition. The problem I am having is that I can click on the Icon and have it show up, but an error message shows up right after the window opens that says "windows explorer has encountered a problem and has to close." then it apologizes. It happens every time I try to open Control Panel. The reason I need to open it is that I need to delete a user because it is slowing down my computer. If anyone knows a shortcut to open the users icon in control panel, that would also help. I have tried to get to control panel from the start menu, desktop, shortcuts, my computer, and almost everything else.

Sounds like you may have a corrupt control panel file or files. Windows can do weird things like this. Fortunately, there is a solution. You should find the following discussion very helpful and possibly solve your problem!

Hope this helps!

If this article isn't enough trying searching using the key words "windows," "xp," "control," "panel," "error," "corrupt" for more articles.

Before you go paying Microsoft for tech support there are a couple of things you can try.

First, click on Start > Help and Support. In the center of the screen you should see System Restore highlighted in blue. Click on that, and have your system restored. Be sure to pick a restore date that is BEFORE you had trouble accessing the Control Panel. After the restore is complete, restart your system.

You can also try typing Delete User into the search window in Help and Support. It may take you to an alternative menu which will allow you to remove the User.

However, not being able to access the Control Panel is a sign of problems to come. It's a vital part of the Operating System, and your computer may begin to act strangely if it's not fixed.

One last thing - be sure to go to the Microsoft website and install ALL the updates they have for your version of XP. Most especially Service Pack II.

Good luck.

Did you try restarting your computer? Maybe that'll work. Also, you could scan your computer with a virus scanner to make sure it's not a virus. You could also try going to System Restore (Accessories, System Tools, System Restore) and going back to the last day you remember your Control Panel working... maybe you will find something.

This would be a good time to pay Microsoft for technical support if you have to, or reformat with your Windows XP and reinstall it. Microsoft should be able to restore the necessary files so it works for you, whether you'll have to pay for the fix I don't know. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/support/

Sometimes you have to reinstall a program and then immediately uninstall to get the Remove part to work.
