I got this info from a Methadone fact sheet (see Web site link below): "Research and clinical studies suggest that long-term MMT is medically safe (COMPA, 1997). When methadone is taken under medical supervision, long-term maintenance causes no adverse effects to the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, bones, blood, brain, or other vital body organs. Methadone produces no serious side effects, although some patients experience minor symptoms such as constipation, water retention, drowsiness, skin rash, excessive sweating, and changes in libido. Once methadone dosage is adjusted and stabilized or tolerance increases, these symptoms usually subside."

Methadone is a safe drug to take long term. It is also an excellent pain killer. Methadone has been around a very long time and we've had unlimited opprtunities to study its effects and observe patients for long term problems. It's a very safe drug if you take it as directed. There are worse things like smoking cigarettes.

One other thing, the addiction you develop is not the same as a drug addict's. Yours is a controlled addiction monitored by your doc; a drug addict takes immensely higher doses for euphoria. Your body is supposed to get addicted, that's completely normal, you should expect it and accept it as a part of your new pain-free life. Most people don't understand this. You are not going to be a junkie on the corner begging for money. It is completely unnecessary for you to wean off methadone because people tell you to. Listen to your doc and make intelligent decisions. Narcotics such as methadone are completely misunderstood because most docs are biased and inexperienced. You can take methadone forever, but listen to your doc...DrP

the long term is you become addicted to it you need to reduce the amount you take each week with help. don't stop altogether as you will get drug withdrawal which is another kettle of fish, you just need to reduce. the person that i know has been taking it on and off for nine years
