That "seed" is actually the testicle of a sewer goat.

Sewer goats feed on peaches and the males bury their testicles near peach trees until mating season. Mating season begins when the peaches begin to fall from the trees. Sewer goats eat the peaches and their testicles are restored.

Be careful eating them.

Yes.

Don't eat it.

"Q: I ate a peach yesterday and the pit was partially opened. For the first time I noticed there were seeds inside and so I bit one to see what it tasted like. It tasted very almondy to me and have a nice soft nut like texture. Are these seeds edible and if so, why can't I find any commercial reference to them? (E-mail reference)

A: Not a good idea! You are fortunate to be alive. All parts of the peach, plum, and cherry are poisonous, with the stone kernels containing the highest concentration of cyanide, at 164 mg/100 grams. While no human deaths have been reported, hogs and cattle have succumbed to eating fallen peaches pit and all. Now you know why they are not for sale on the market."

"Poisonous Part
Wilted leaves, twigs (stems), seeds.
Symptoms
Gasping, weakness, excitement, pupil dilation, spasms, convulsions, coma, respiratory failure."

Yes, it is poisonous. It contains cyanide, 164 mg/100 grams. This amount has not proven fatal to human beings, but small animals have died from eating peach pits. Of course, if you eat the pits in large quantity, the cyanide will kill you.

I have heard that peach pits, and apple seed, and some other types of seeds contain strychnine, in small amounts

No it's just the peach pit, but I'm sure it won't feel good going the other way.
