Dear Puzzled:

There are two answers to this question, P., one serious, one retarded. Let's start with the former.

(1) The egg came first. We know that chickens evolved from some earlier, non-chickenoid form of life, e.g., the half-bird, half-reptile Archaeopteryx. These non-chickens, however, arrived in eggs. Ergo, eggs were on the scene before chickens.

(2) The chicken came first because (sigh) the chicken had to get laid before the egg could. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Well I think the egg came before chicken but there is a 50, 50 chance for both to come. However, when living things were made the chicken would have had to be made first because when humans were made they had to make the mother first then the baby would have to come next.

The egg came first. Fish were laying eggs befofre there was even vertebrate life on land, let along birds, and chickens of the modern type -- specialized for frequent egg-laying rather than laying just once a year at nesting season -- weren't around until the Egyptians and Chinese bred them from wild birds.

There was this chicken, relaxing in bed, smoking a cigarette. Next to it was an egg, furious and frustrated. The egg snapped at the chicken "Well, now we know the answer to THAT question, don't we???"

Well scientifically speaking according to evolution for the present day chicken to be hatched there had to be a present day egg...so this settles the debate, THE EGG CAME FIRST.
