Eh, sure. If you want to practice with me you can e-mail me at bluesylvia@hotmail.com . I need the practice as well.
For my "credentials", I've taken Japanese within an actual classroom setting through teaching with a young, native Japanese speaker for two years and will be taking my third once school restarts in my area. (August time.) Because of how things are rushed at my school, I'll be entering AP Japanese/Japanese IV.

Honestly, that's useless. You can wait till you get to college and take classes there or find a one-to-one tutor. You'd actually be better off using a webcam and setting up a language exchange (you teach them English and they teach you J-go).
Anyway, the way I learned was one to one with a teacher. I just think by the time you actually want to try to use it, learning the way you suggest is treading water.
FYI, this is coming from someone who speaks Japanese and also has taught...albeit not J-go but English and writing.
Oh, don't listen to J-Pop--complete crap...even worse than Britney or any of their ilk this side of the Pacific Ocean.

Since you obviously have access to a computer, take a look at the wonderful software available online or at your favorite book store. It's tremendous and some programs take you from beginning to advanced. My son has a Japanese program that he used in conjunction with actual classes but he now just uses the software. And you go along at your own pace. His program also has lots of cultural information. I have a wonderful Spanish program that I've used for many years. Good luck!

google "japanese" and "penpal" or "penfriend" and a million sites will come up where you can find Japanese people who are looking for the same thing. Then when you go to visit them in Japan they will pick you up from the airport, take you to fancy bars and pay for everything, then let you stay in their home where their mother will greet you with this huge spread for breakfast. Hope you like fish for breakfast.

if you have a mac you can easily go into system preferences, then international and choose a keyboard setting to type in japanese. you can then easily just click on a little flag at the top of the desktop then choose to write in hiragana or katakana. if you want to write back and forth with someone in japanese, i suggest finding a japanese penpal. you can find one on the internet.
