The camera is a Canon NTSC ZR60. I have had it for a couple years. I can still play back video on it so the screen itself must not be the problem.

That is a usual problem i have heard from so many people not just for canon but even for sony. There is a fault in the camera's circuit or the lens sensor. I believe the camcorder is not in the warrenty coz they normally come with only one year warrenty and I wouldn't recommend you to get it serviced from an independent repair shops coz they will damage it further for sure.

Send it back to the manufacturer (ie. canon in this case), but it will cost you a lot for sure.
