My brother says she has always been a night owl, but my neice is staying with me for part of her summer vacation and I'm worried about how tired she is. She goes to bed and then I find out that she was up half the night reading because she "can't sleep". Then she sleep in during the day and is cranky when she does get up. Is there any kind of safe, natural sleep aid I could give her to help her fall asleep? She's almost as tall as I am and weighs about 5-10 lbs more than I do (so she's almost adult sized). Her parents told me that they give her benadryl sometimes, but I am not comfortable with that. :(

Oh, I have problems like that right now because I am 8.5 months pregnant and can never sleep (unless it's day time and then I ONLY want to sleep, lol). Milk and turkey have calming effects (I forgot the name of what is in them that makes you sleepy, but it is why everyone takes a nap after Thanksgiving dinner!) so a glass of milk and a turkey sandwich before bed always help me.

Is it possible that she is depressed or has an anxiety disorder? If she does, then getting help for that might help her sleep.

Keep her REALLY busy during the day. Going to a pool or water park can really wear people out in the summer. Outside activities in general will help as well. Then start doing calming things after dinner, like watching a movie or reading or something.

My son is one of those "night owls"he was that way from birth. I am not okay with "drugging" kids, so here is what I did. Up everymorning at regular time and busy all day. He had to be up at 7 for it to work. No TV no computer, etc. busy. At night, he was allowed to watch TV with family for little while. By 11pm, if he could not get on phone or puter, "poof" he was sleepy. It is almost like he would distract himself from sleep if he could find something to do. After a few weeks of this routine, he was sleepy at a normal time.

Maybe a hot bath about an hour before bed. Also try certain kinds of herbal teas. There are some that are specifically made to help people sleep. You can find them in grocery stores or health food stores.

Lavender oil (on the wrists) and lavender bath products help humans fall asleep. I also have sleep problems and use both, and I have a lavender-stuffed teddy bear. Works like a charm.

Make her watch three continuous episodes of Dr. Phil and that's guaranteed to knock her cold all night long.
