First let me explain that puppies are just like having a new born child, second if you have never had a puppy I suggest an older dog between 8mo to 1yr that is already potty trained. Another thing with a puppy is you never know what kind of temperament they will have when they grow up, you need a dog you know is going to be good with children. I don't know if you are a first time pet owner. I am guessing you are just from what you wrote. The dog you just described is an American Pit Bull Terrior or an American Staffordshire Terrier. These animals are wonderful with children, are easy to train, have extremely short coats that require no grooming, and aren't too big or small. In temperament testing they scored better than the Lab or Golden Retriever. Please don't let the "Pit bull" terrify you. At least research the breed and make an educated decision. I will give you a list of great websites. Also it is always best to rescue a dog from a shelter or there are wonderful free dogs in the papers. I got my pit mix as a free dog from the paper. She is now in training to become a therapy dog. Remember with an older dog you know exactly what you are getting, a shelter dog typically will have all it's shots, worming, spaying/nueturing, and be tempermant tested. Good luck and feel free to e-mail me with any more questions!

A LABBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!!! they are not huge, but not small just right, you can get them for free, i got mine for $20.00 and she is worth $20 million here is some info on them:
General Appearance
The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog possessing a sound, athletic, well-balanced conformation that enables it to function as a retrieving gun dog; the substance and soundness to hunt waterfowl or upland game for long hours under difficult conditions; the character and quality to win in the show ring; and the temperament to be a family companion. Physical features and mental characteristics should denote a dog bred to perform as an efficient Retriever of game with a stable temperament suitable for a variety of pursuits beyond the hunting environment. The most distinguishing characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are its short, dense, weather resistant coat; an ''otter'' tail; a clean-cut head with broad back skull and moderate stop; powerful jaws; and its ''kind,'' friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament. The typical Labrador possesses style and quality without over refinement, and substance without lumber or cloddiness. The Labrador is bred primarily as a working gun dog; structure and soundness are of great importance.

Owning
The Labrador Retriever is gentle with children and the elderly. If it is intended as a pet, keep in mind that Labrador puppies are full of energy. The Labrador Retriever has a stable temperament and adapts to new surroundings easily. The Labrador Retriever is not an aggresive dog, but it will bark to ward off strangers.

Temperament
True Labrador Retriever temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the ''otter'' tail. The ideal disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog.

Did You Know
The Labrador Retriever did not come from Labrador, but from Newfoundland. The Labrador Retriever is one of the prime breeds selected as guide and rescue dogs.

The best place to find a nice dog is at an animal shelter. The cost is low compared to buying an animal and you will be saving a pet that otherwise would be condemned to a life in a cage or worse...death.

you could try a shelter or a pound (not more than $100) , try looking in your newspaper(ranges), or local breeders(also ranges). I go to the animal shelter almost every week they always have new dogs in so if i were you i would go with trying the animal shelter first, and if they dont have any dogs you like there try asking when they will be getting new puppys in. Good luck and hope i helped!!!!

Hey, our dog is going to be having puppies in the next month or so i would say and we're going to give them away for free just because they're mutts But umm otherwise labs are usually nice dogs and easy to train.

Go to the humane society...please adopt a puppy. Try not to buy them from the mall or pet stores. There are so many homeless dogs and cats out there.

rotts, pits and dobermans are NOT dangerous dogs. i was attacked by a german shepard. that is a taught behaviour. my pit mixes are the best dogs and have never harmed a soul.
anyway...sounds like you need a lab. go to an animal shelter and spend time with different breeds there. ADOPT!

I would love to plug my favorite breed here, because they are everything that you described... But that's only my opinion. I'd rather suggest that you go to http://www.akc.org and look through their list of breeds. They'll tell you size and temperament, as well as many other details.

There are *so many* dogs that fit your criteria! Best of luck with finding the best one for you! I'd check with breeds in the Non-sporting (or Companion) class, or one in the Terrier class first...

get a toy poodle they are active, can be trained and love kids and know the difference from wright and wrong.they dont shed. Also the price can be expensive it all depends on the person you get it from like mine was about $500

if your looking for price, go to the humaine society. that is where i get all my dogs. you only have to pay for shots, the dog itself is free.
for your information, dogs are not dangerous, people who raise dogs are dangerous. i have pit bulls, rots, and dobermans, not to mention other dogs, and none of them are mean, except one. a jack russell terrier. those are the meanest dogs i've ever seen. all they do is bite. i returned my jack russell, never again will i get another one. those dogs are the most jealous i've ever seen. if you want good with kids, do NOT get a jack russell.
