She is 12 and is on 54mg of Concerta (along with Wellbutrin and Clonidine). Her pdoc thinks we should take her off the Concerta for the summer and see how she does. I already have his input about what to expect - more hyper, less predictable, less irritable (less irritable will be very pleasant) - but I would love to hear from an 'at home expert'. The pdoc does not have to live with this 24/7 but moms and dads do. She is very hyper and impulsive in the mornings before she has her meds (quite toddler-like). Please tell me that it can't get much worse.
She was already on these meds before we met and adopted her so I have never seen her without them.

Yes, she is seeing a therapist bi-weekly to help with the ADHD and RAD. I am also seeing one to help me work with her.
I spoke to the pdoc before about Stratters and he felt that it doesn't work. Should I give it more thought?

I recently took our 18 year old son off concerta, he was on 54 mg as well. The only real difference that I have noticed is he is more fidgety than he was on the med. Concerta is not like most of the ADHD meds it doesn't build up in the body like Strattera/Ritalin etc. So whatever is going to happen it should happen in the first 48 hours.
Hope this helps.

Our child was taking off his Concerta this spring and it was a nightmare. He was diax with being bi-polar, he was also on Clondine and still is. We have been playing with his meds since then..The Concerta was aiding in seeing people, it has been a long spring and summer. But it your child is ADHD can they change the meds to Strtera it is a none stimulate. But keep her on the Concert until you see if the Strtera works sometimes it takes up to 6 weeks to be fully in her system. You will find that if she taking off the Concerta she will be the same all day long as she is now before the meds. She may also need to See a therapist to help deal with issues that are unresolved from before you got her, don't give up. I have adopted children also and they do bring baggage that needs to be addressed. Good luck and God bless you.

the clonidine and wellbutrin should keep her pretty calm. I'm on wellbutrin for both depression and ADHD,and i'm not hyper. I'm sure clonidine will take care of that, depending on what time it's given. They give it to children to relax them before surgery, so... yeah. And as for it getting much worse, the concerta is a stimulant, wellbutrin is kind of a stimulant, and clonidine is a depressent, and although wellbutrin is still a stimulant it doesn't really increase activity, only focus and feelings of physical pleasure. Give it a try, you can always go back on it if it doesn't work.

I can so relate to what you are going through. I even thought I was a bad mother. I took parenting classes and I finally found a good psychiatrist after putting him in psych hospitals and to see numerous psychiatrists. I realized that he was going to get my attention, no matter what, so I gave him good attention. I learned to pick and choose my battles, so that I could focus on the most important problems and not harp on the small things. I kept him on a strict schedule at all times. I watched to see which foods affected him. I tried to keep him from being bored by introducing new things to do and challenges. I took his favorite things from him if he misbehaved, and I rewarded him for the good things he did. I refused to argue with him. I told him that I loved him at least 10 times a day, and that no matter what he did, he could not stop me from loving him. Here is the good news. He grew up around 18, and started acting civilized. He finally started getting his life together and learning to act better. He is now 23, working two jobs, and going to college. I could not be more proud. He tells me that the key was finding someone like Dr. Detrinis that did not demean him, or take any bull from him, and the biggest factor was the fact that I never stopped loving him, and reminded him that I would never stop loving him no matter what. He said that he still regrets what he put me through, but is grateful that God gave him a mother like me. I am just grateful that God gave me the strength to never give up on him. I cried, I prayed, I went to parenting classes, I drove hundreds of miles to visit him in the hospitals, I quit my job to attend school with him, I took depression meds, because I was so depressed about what would happen to him. The main thing is that I NEVER gave up on him, and I am soooo very glad I didn't!!! He is a loving, caring, kind, considerate person that is intelligent, hard working, and I expect he will be successful too. By the way, I also raised a daughter that is a award winning school teacher, in a very successful marriage, and has 5 children. God bless you and your son. I will pray for you to have the guidance and help you need. By the way, there is some relief for parents with problem children. Talk to the school about getting into a program that gives relief for parents with difficult children. You should qualify, and they should have the information you need to locate the one in your community. Ours was called "Helping Hands"

What is the most important information I should know about bupropion?

You should not take bupropion if you have seizures, an eating disorder, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or sedatives. If you take Wellbutrin for depression, do not also take Zyban to quit smoking.
Do not take bupropion if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits.
Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as unusual mood or behavior changes.
