My year old crib mattress got two rips in it while moving, the rips are about ½ inch long.

If I keep the side with the rips on the bottom and I put a mattress pad cover over the good side, will it be okay to use?

I was planning on having the baby sleep on the good side and keep the mattress well protected with a waterproof mattress cover.

What are the “rules” with crib mattresses? When should you throw them out or replace them?

I think it's Ok, I did it! Flip the mattress and put a mattress cover and sheet on it and how could it hurt? I think it'll be fine.

If you use the precautions you listed then it should be fine to reuse. My son's mattress has a small hole in it and I still use it. Also, with the recent epidemic of bed bugs plaguing many parts of the world, I would patch the holes with duct tape or something. I know that it sounds red-neck, but it would prevent any of the little bloodsuckers from getting in your baby's mattress and making a feast of your little one!!!

I hope this info on crib mattress helps :

If you are looking to buy a new mattress, you may consider crib mattress as a choice. But as a layman how could you judge the quality of the crib mattress?

I don't honestly think it would hurt as long as you remember to keep the ripped side down. You don't want little one to get a hold of the filling and choke. It might would be better to replace it now, because eventually baby will grow and start exploring which could still result in getting little hands on filling that looks fluffy like cotton candy. Just my opinion.

as long as you turn it over I don't see how it could pose any type of threat. Reuse the mattress. Americans are so quick to throw things away.

I would reuse it. Just patch it up. Just make sure it doesn't have any loose threads or something the baby could get hold of. Or just flip it. Either way should work. And yes americans are quick to throw things away, even though I am american :P

I would say you are ok, as long as you take the precautions you listed. These things are too expensive to throw away because of such a small thing!! :)
