In some families expressing affection is very difficult. you would have to look at the way those neices and nephews were raised and how they treat other children to see if their picking on your son is taunting and mean or simply their way of showing the boy they like him. Three year olds are terribly funny in how they react to a given situation and perhaps these older neices and nephews are fascinated by his responses. The best way to deal with it is to speak up and let them know it is offensive to you and that you want them to change the way they interact with your son. If you are uncomfortable doing that, just realize that your son is learning how to be a man from you, and by NOT speaking up on his behalf, you are telling him not to take a stand that may make someone uncomfortable. Is that the lesson you want to teach?

There's a point when teasing becomes bullying and it sounds like this is one case. You neices and nephews, being older, should know better. Three yr olds can be stubborn, and will be outspoken if he feels he is being taunted - why shouldn't he be able to stand up for himself? You need to think about the effect this could have on your child's self esteem and act before it really affects him. Firmly explain to your family members that their behaviour must change, they should be behaving as role models for your son. If they don't get their acts together they shouldn't be allowed around your child.

It's their way of being playful. They don't realize they are being mean. Just tell them and they will change their approach. They love your little guy.
