The pressure fluctuation causes ear pain for several people that I know, especially on the descent. It may have been a cause of an ear infection in one person.

Chewing gum and yawning are popular. However, neither has ever worked for me or my friends. Our last trip, they were both chewing like cows, yet still had blocked ears when we landed.

There is a knack to be learned.
With teeth almost closed, jut your jaw forward forcefully (as far as your face muscles can make it go) and lower your jaw in the extended position. Repeat several times as the plane is climbing. This opens the valves in your throat at the lower end of the tubes that go to your ear.
If you do it properly right now, as you sit before your computer, you will hear a noise in your ears.
It is easier to do if you do it early rather than late.
Chewing gum is also recommended but I think is less effective.

You can drink water, chew gum, or simply swallow. The key on the descent is to do it early enough - you should start it at least 15 minutes out. Usually you get warnings from the crew around 10 minutes out when you are told to turn off your electronics.
Many people fall into the trap of waiting too long (i.e., when the landing gear comes down that's about 3 minutes to landing).

Chewing gum or yawning. I can't chew gum do to my gastric bypass, so I just yawn whenever I get that tight feeling in my ears, and it works. :)
