You have to teach by example. Don't gripe, complain, nag, or fight with anybody while she's there. Talk your mom and your sisters into doing the same thing, but without letting your grandma in on it at all. No matter how hard she tries to upset you all, you just be nice. If you're all in on it together it should bring the rest of you closer. It's a blast to practice communication skills with those people - every time she gripes, you just repeat back to her what she said. Like when she says "Your pants are much too tight! I can't believe your mother lets you get away with that." You state "the tightness of my pants bothers you, and you feel my mother should do something about it." Don't say anything else! It will drive her NUTS and you won't even be doing anything wrong!

I think I would ask her why she complains so much. Is life so bad for her? When she nags, ask her why she is nagging and when she fights with your mom, tell them both that it bothers you to hear them argue. It takes two to fight, so maybe you can tell your mom to not allow it to happen. I know this is all easier said then done, but maybe your Grandma doesn't realize how negative she is; it's just a bad habit that needs to be broken. Sometimes, my mother gets very negative and I ask her why she is being like that. It usually lightens her up (at least for a while). Make a joke about what she is nagging about. Sometimes that helps too, but be kind to her; you never know what she may be going thru.

Yeah I know what you mean my grandma is the same way. All I do to stay away from her is say "I can't stay my dad wanted me to do something" or "I forgot to feed the dog." So I get some away time from her. This might not work for everyone so just chat on the computer, on the phone, listen to music with earphones, or if you have a pet play with it outside. Just seem busy when she's around. I hope this helps.

She might be afraid of being old and closer to death and expresses this fear in the wrong way. Try talking to her, ask about her youth. My grandmother was a little mean too, but towards the end of her life, before she became sick, I started to talk to her like a person, not a senile old woman. In doing this I learned so much about her and my family. I now regret not spending more time with her. All I can say is continue to be patient with her.

Maybe she wants some attention. Does anyone go to her and just talk about how their day was , or something that might have happened during the day? She's lonely and this is probably how she knows to get somebody to notice. She's lived a long time and has a right to gripe. Be patient with her. Good luck..

you dont have to cope. You have to sit with her and spend time. pretend your with a small naughty kid. human beings have three childhoods. one is the original one. second is from 55 onwards, and third is from 75 onwards.right now she will act as irritating as a 3yr to 12 yr old kid. So treat her like a child and be patient and think of new interesting things and dont ever ignore her. she needs lots and lots of love.

Your Grandmother needs attention. Find something you can do together that she likes and build upon that. Most times a person nags and such when they are fighting for attention and love.

Grow fast & become an instant Grandma!
Get into her shoes & run 10 miles. You'll be away from her & you'll have her shoes too! This is from a quote I heard lately.

Just ignore her as much as possible. Invest in headphones so you don't have to listen to it. Spend time out of the house, even if it's just sitting outside, whatever gets you away from it!
