So much effort is put into creating liveable habitats; could it be that we will need this technology to survive the world we are making with our industrial carelessness?

No. Firstly, its such a small part of the US Budget- well less than 1%. We have a huge budget deficit- where we are spending more than we take in already- if they eliminated the program, there would certainly be no guarantee that it would go for bettering anything, it might just disappear altogether. Secondly, the technology developed by the Space Program does improve our lives on Earth, in quite a number of ways. The Space Program is a great investment in today, and the future. Just ask Stephen Hawking, possibly the most brilliant man alive today.

No I don't think so. We spend a very small amount of money on NASA and the mission of exploring space is both noble and interesting. We never know where important breakthroughs will come from. The most recent NASA budget was just $16 billion, a very small part of the total budget.

I do think we should be spending the money we are currently wasting in Iraq on improving our lives on Earth. We are currently spending over $10 billion per month in Iraq. The NASA budget would cover Iraq operations for about 6 weeks.

Prior to this war we were spending about 1 billion per year on operations to contain Saddam, which proved to be highly effective. Now we spend that much money in about three days in Iraq. That really angers me. We could have made tremendous strides on combating the real problem of global warming and in so doing also greatly reduce the amount of money Americans now send to the Middle East to buy oil. Those dollars are funding terrorists. Clearly Bush has made terrorism and global warming much worse.

Well, I agree that the money spent on studying the distant reaches of the universe could be better spent on funding hospitals and schools here on Earth.

Putting up satellites for communications and weather forecasting, on the other hand, is useful here-and-now.

I do wish that NASA would get it right the first time and stop sending up so many Mars probes that fall into the ocean, or miss Mars, or crash on Mars, or (for all I know) get shot down by the Martian defense forces. THAT is truly wasted money.

What is even more disgraceful is the waste of astronauts' lives.

The energy we spend on Nasa already does improve life on Earth. Nasa's revolutionary developments have been incorporated into consumer products and imporved our lives in countless ways. Read more below!

Ah, the familiar "either/or" false choice. What makes you think the "energy we devote to NASA", assuming it could be redirected (and it couldn't be) would then be "directed to improving our lives on Earth?"
Remember Vietnam? Same argument. People said. "Why not spend the billions we're using in Vietnam to make life in the USA better?
Vietnam stopped - the "billions" didn't go towards making life in the USA better.

No. We need NASA for space exploration so we will have someplace to go when we finish destroying this planet.
However, the money we spend on wars would certainly help a lot of people.

yes, i thruely believe that, i also believe that a lot of the money that is given to nasa by the government could be put to better use, such as relieving the national defict so that the government would not need to dip into social security funds, as well as use the money to improve other programs

No. Space is our future. If we give up space we give up our future, forever condemning us to live in poverty on this one small planet while ignoring the possibilities of the limitless universe. Just because we are not yet good enough at space flight right now to make use of the rest of the universe is no reason to give up trying. If we don't at least try we will never succeed.

I think that NASA spent money and resources are to our benefit! I prefer to spend them to NASA than another bombardment, genocide, etc.
How are we supposed to improve if we do not support and promote institutions like NASA?
