Organic milk is milk from cows that have not been fed antibiotics and hormones to build their immunity. It is ultrapasteurized because the cow has no antibiotics in its system to prevent bacterial infections. The milk itself is safe to drink, though, because of the ultrapasteurization. I suppose it is more expensive because the ultrapasteurization costs more, but it is healthier for the drinker because when he/she drinks non-organic milk, he/she receives all the antibiotics that the cow received and thus builds a resistance to antibiotics. When a resistance is built, you cannot take certain antibiotics to treat infections.

If you are somewhere you can go directly to a farmer you can probably buy the same product cheaper. People near me farm with absolutely no hormones or additives to the grass or grain. They don't give hormones to their cows. This is organic milk. They sell it for only $3 a gallon. This is in eastern rural Canada. The only reason it costs more in the store is because they think they can get more by saying its organic,....actually in the end, it costs LESS to produce in the long run. It is expensive for a farmer to convert from one to the other though.

It's from cows who have not been treated with growth hormones. There are many benefits of organic milk such as Omega 3 and other health benefits, environmental benefits and animal welfare benefits. The cost of a gallon is well worth it if you don't want cow hormones in your body.

Organic foods conform to the legal statutes governing organic food production.

no pesticides on crops or grazing land

no hormonal treatments to increase production

no antibiotics unless medicaly nessisary, and milk must be disguarded as long as antibiotis are present in the cow.

no chemical treatment of the milk

pastures and feed must be certified pesticide free

as to whether organic is better... it is better for the cow, and the environment, and probably better for you.

interesting question that there are rules and guess what they are about to change cause there are those people who would abuse the rules. the feds are on the job they are inspecting the cow paddy (sp) as we confer. The main concern is living conditions and feeding. Guess what when we make it nice for the cows it is cost/labor intensive and that raises the cost is there a good reason for Organic. that sir is another question!
