I read from the book "My forbidden Face" by Latifa, and it says that during the occupation of Taliban in Afghanistan, there's a lot of rules which say that women can't work, or men must grow their beard, etc. The weird part is, Taliban said that all those rules are from the Qur'an. Is it really true?

You have to remember that the Taliban come from a poor tribal region in the south of Afghanistan. Most of the Mulahs cannot read or write let alone read the Arabic Quran. It is something like the cult leaders in rural US that feed on uneducated peoples spiritual needs. I lived in Afghanistan for a year and a half and you cannot imagine how backwards some of these people are. I once saw a guy try and hammer a nail and electic cord into a rock wall with a rock. Some of these are jsut a step up from cave men so theology is several evolutionary leaps away.

What happened was that the Taliban were Islamic extremists. They interpreted the Qur'an in thier own way, and pulled these rules from there, when most Muslims did not believe that was what was meant in the Qur'an.

Nope - just look at all the other Islamic countries (well, except for Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan) where life-styles are so different from the Taliban rules.

Yes. A great deal of what the Taliban did is interpretation, extrapolation and outright decisions having nothing to do with the Koran.

At a time when Islam is faced with hostile media coverage particularly where the status of women in Islam is concerned, it may be quite surprising to learn that the majority of converts to Islam are WOMEN
The Muslim woman was given a role, duties and rights 1400 years ago that most women do not enjoy today, even in the West. These are designed to keep balance in society; what may seem unjust or missing in one place is compensated for or explained in another place.

What Is the Status of Women in Islam?
Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her property and earnings without any guardianship over her (whether that be her father, husband, or anyone else). She has the right to buy and sell, give gifts and charity, and may spend her money as she pleases. A marriage dowry is given by the groom to the bride for her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her husband’s.

Islam encourages the husband to treat his wife well, as the Prophet Muhammad said: {The best among you are those who are best to their wives.}1

Mothers in Islam are highly honored. Islam recommends treating them in the best way. A man came to the Prophet Muhammad and said, “O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship?” The Prophet said: {Your mother.} The man said, “Then who?” The Prophet said: {Then your mother.} The man further asked, “Then who?” The Prophet said: {Then your mother.} The man asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet said: {Then your father.}

Of course it's not from the Quran. That's why they are called 'terrorists' and the entire Muslim world is fighting them all - Taliban,Qaeda, etc.
